Mom got duped on the phone

Woke up today to find out that my mom got duped on the phone today by "microsoft security". They had her go to some website and and download something to her laptop. She had to reboot and when she tried to log back in she was locked out of her laptop.

The laptop itself is old as shit and we were gonna replace it soon anyways so were not worried about that. I guess the people on the phone were asking about other pc's in the house. The laptop was connected to our wifi router and did have access to the other pc's on the network.

My question is what software should i run on the other pc's to make sure they are clean and what i should do as far as the router and network goes?

What is the make and model of router?

I would scan the computers with this. Burn the image with portable imgburn and boot the disk. Can be used from a USB stick as well. If you want to be extra paranoid run Herdprotect, but that will take a long time.

Probably nothing wrong with the other machines. I'm guessing the tool she downloaded was legitimate, but used as part of the scam. Just scan the computers as you usually would, and call it a day.

I suppose it depends on what they were looking for...for example, it is possible they were looking for other devices for further exploitation down the road...
However, unless the other machines had no authentication at all, then, I wouldn't worry that much about them.

For the infected machine, I would wipe that, and stick linux on it.

And these punks that do this crap to the elderly need to be nuked.

We got those calls back in June. Person claiming to be Microsoft Support and basically wanting you to get on your pc and click what they tell you.

At first they talked to my mother who asked them what, why, and to repeat stuff - basically sounding like a befuddled older woman. Being called out of the blue by Microsoft generally makes you go ... W.T.H? Sensing a prime target they'd call back other days. But she never complied beyond answering some questions. Eventually I was there when a call came in and picked up the phone, I didn't dispute their claim to be Microsoft but I did ask why they were calling me when I never contacted them. They hung up and never called back.

To be extra safe I would format and reinstall, perhaps even all the windows machines as depending on what they installed it may have spread to the other machines too. Who knows what kind of stuff they may have installed on there. Probably some kind of randomware.
