Monitor systems from a system

Hi,

I have five computers and a laptop. I wanto monitor all desktops from my laptop. I mean I want to be notified if any of the desktop is shut off or down or not in network.

Is there any freeware/opensource software available?

Is there any easy way to achieve this?
