Iceland at present day is only 300k people. And that's only recently compared to recent Independence in 1940s. Prior to that it was under Danish and Norwegian rule (12th century) as an extension of sparse groups.

I think this is why they really don't have an established cuisine identity. Aside from some pickled fish, veggie soup & goat head, the rest is pretty standard 'European'.

The Rejkjavik (capital) is very cosmopolitan. It's bigger than Boston & Cambridge combined. It has tons of diverse food and is hardly different than Newbury St. or NYC's 5th avenue (Asian, American bars, burgers, French, Italian, you name it).

In the countryside, they also offer standard European fare for dinner. The guest houses serve typical continental breakfast minus the cooked eggs. It's just boiled eggs.

Fun fact, Iceland has by far the most Subway franchises per capita of any nation and are sorta famous for their hot dogs (nothing special IMHO). They are literally all over the place in Reykjavik. If you go be sure to dine here; great food even if you don't want to sample the minke whale, puffin, or reindeer pate.

I assume you don't speak Icelandic, how did you find communication with people?

English is very common. I think even more prevalent than Quebecois speaking English based on my experience.

A couple are of Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon. IIRC the next to last was on the way to a central region glacier (Langjökull or Hofsjökull?) where I went dogsledding. The falls are Hraunfossar in the central region about 100km east of Borgarnes. The last is of Reykjavik harbor. Have some more on dropbox of the Snæfellsnes peninsula and other spots but can't access right now.

I'd love to see Snaefellsnes. We were debating going SE or NW. We decided on SE.

I just did a random search for flights from Toronto to Iceland at the end of April. About $1100-$1200 round trip per person. Pearson is such an expensive airport to fly out of. Even domestically. Which is why I don't travel often. The low dollar doesn't help either. We still get paid the same whether it's worth $1 US of $0.70 US.

Iceland is on my list though. I'd be really tempted to run around yelling Fus Ro Dah at people.

? Pearson is cheaper to fly out of internationally than Detroit from what i have seen, not sure about Buffalo but i doubt there are very many international flights from there.

Definitely cheaper than you'd think. It's cheaper than going to Africa or Asia or those crazy exotic places.

Flight is $500-600 RT (from east coast). Guest houses are $100-120 USD a night and they always serve full breakfast (and we always made sandwiches for lunch- free 2 meals).

Car rental was $20~30 a day.

Thanks, I will keep this place in mind, when I first saw your pictures, I thought, well thats another place I'll never be able to afford to go to.

Buffalo is stupid cheap if you're flying anywhere in the US or Canada. When I was looking to go to Vancouver a few years back, it was actually less to fly from there than it was from Toronto.

Is that Geysir Geyser? (I.e. the original geyser?)

Do they still have to dump soap in it to make it go off? (Never been there, but I've heard about it.)

Wow, awesome pictures, thanks! I think I'm going to add it to the list of places I'd like to visit. And, assuming I'm converting correctly, prices seem quite low there. (1.490, kr is about $11 US? - the lobster price in the window.)

You mean moderately high.

Any cheap eats are easily $15-20 USD. That thing is just a cup of lobster bisque with few pieces of lobster. I guess it's not totally bad if you're used to NYC or SF.

Thank you for the pictures. I'm trying to plan a trip to Iceland in mid September. Could you share any pointers/recommendations/lessons?

Awesome. I'm going in the middle of April and have NO IDEA what to do. I have a week to cram as much life inside me as possible.

You have an itinerary you want to share?

There are lots of good companies offering pre-packaged deals and there's no shame in taking advantage of them. Iceland air even offers flight/tour package deals, I opted for the Glacier Walk flight/tour package myself and had good results although I don't know if it saved me any money. If you want to book with a travel company independently from your airline ticket, there are plenty of good options. Here's a couple I can highly recommend. The Grey Line tour in the first link is an amazing deal because I don't even think you could drive it yourself for that price. Also, if anyone needs a private car service I can give you a name for that also, just PM me.

I have TONS to share. PM me if you want more. Some very brief pointers:

- All depends on how long you're planning on staying. The trip gets dramatically different because more days = southern region where you'll see real glaciers. I went in Sept as well. It's winter equinox. Days are still long, it's out of season for ice cavern stuff, but plenty of other things to do.

3 days = see capital, eat some food, puffin/whale tour, Blue Lagoon (or any other select hot springs), Golden Circle (including the strokkur geysir). I really don't recommend this. You don't really see Iceland until you're out in the glacial area SE of the country.

6 days (my trip in the pic) = rent a car, drive all the way to Hofn (700 miles), enjoy every beautiful sight & alien landscape. The real glacier beds, black sand beach, etc. My pictures speak for all.

10 days+ = You can circle the entire country via route 1. Visit Akureyri (NE town), and check out Northern area as well as Snaefelleas (sp) which is NE immediate of Iceland. You'll get to hit up few more key natural wonders.
