Yea, if I had the money, I doubt I'd buy such an expensive car.. an M3 will suit me fine.

I think the company logos says it all for the two companies...

Lambo = Bull... brutish and powerful, very masculine in it's appeal. The Murceilago is a beast... older Lambos very much so. The GT racecars that Lambo runs are very VERY much brutish.

Ferrari = the Prancing Horse... flamboyant, agile, and stylish. Striking in a more feminine and elegant way. Yeah, Ferrari has been in racing for a very long time. So what... history is just that. History. Who is to say that new players into a racing arena can't shake things up like Ford did with the GT40 and who's to say that racing heritage means jack squat... like in the case of Mercedes.

I live in an area of NJ next to where celebrities live... I see high buck exotics every so often. I've even seen 2 Ferrari F40s on the road at the same time. Porsche 996 TTs seem to be almost TOO common.

Ferrari is tradition and history.
Lamborghini is just jaw dropping and more exotic than most Ferraris.
Prestige is what you make of it, tradition and history or how exotic it is.
I love the story of how Lamborghini started, Classic!

Put the two together and most people will pay attention to the Lambo. That's not to say the Lambo is any better, but it is definitely a more everyday car than the Lambo.

I don't think Lambo sells enough cars to be in any of the race programs (only like 300 a year or so?). The Gallerdo should change that since it's a more mass produced Lambo.

Lamborghini.
Most Ferraris are too maintstream looking. Lambo looks like it's out of this world exotic.
You can look at Tiburon or Celica, and say it looks a little like a Ferrari. But I challenge you to find any vehicle under 200K that you would say looks even remotely like a Lamborghini.
It looks like nothing else. The body, the doors, the wheels, the air intakes, everything. It epitomizes raw power, excess and uniqueness.
Ferrari might be a better car for racing and whateve, but it won't get the looks that a Lambo does.

both are excellent.

It's just that the new Ferrari Enzo looks kinda silly, even though its the fastest car I've seen.

Hehe, the PC way to answer this question is to say "I like cars designed by Pininfarina!"

Maserati is crap since the early 80s. Didn't Chrysler or Cadillac put out a Maserati-built car that flopped???

I think Ferrari and Lamborghini are pretty much neck and neck as far as "prestige" goes. It takes a lot of green to afford either one. If you roll up to a club in a Murcielago or a Modena, you're going to have chicks all over you, not to mention the bouncer will probably wipe your ass if you ask him to.

That said, I prefer Ferrari over Lamborghini, based on looks alone.

I've heard Ferrari helped Hyundai design the Tiburon, so you're not totally off the mark on that comparison.

That's a common misconception, but it's not true. The Tiburon was designed by an in-house Hyundai design team with no help from Ferrari/Pininfarina. They definitely used the 456 for "inspiration", though.

it was "Maserati-styling"..it was still 100% Chrysler.

Btw, Maserati is NOT CRAP. They are owned by Ferrari, you know that right? They always had Ferrari-derived powertrains.

Heh, Maserati = "the four-door Ferarri" anyone else remember that care from the 80's?? Flopped BIG TIME. I heard stories about a few bad Maseratis in the 80s that ruined the brand's image for awhile. I guess originally it was up there with Rolls and Bentley (a more luxurious, grand touring car compared to Ferrari.)

If I were to buy a car based on racing heritage and pedigree, it probably won't be Italian. I'd probably pick up a V12 Vanquish instead! Not to knock on Ferrari, but I just think Aston Martin is cooler (is it still Brit-owned? Prolly not! )

EDIT: Maserati's image in the US was ruined so bad they stopped selling them here for a decade or so

Ford or GM owns Aston Martin now, I believe?

Aston Martin is now owned by Ford... along with Jaguar. If you're going to buy a car based on racing heritage... and its not going to be italian... go german... mercedes and auto union spanked ass back then...

Even though Ford owns it now, I'm sure they still retain some degree of autonomy.

I see far fewer Lambos than I do Ferarris. Ferraris are quite common in Plano, especially at Linebacker Enterprises. I'd have to say Lambo is far more prestigious. You see a guy at the gas station in a Ferrari, you say "damn nice car". You see a guy at the gas station in a Lambo, you say "holy fvck, nice car!!!"
