More Realism In Gaming

How many recent games tanked like SWTOR because their graphics wasn't good enough compared to not having good enough gameplay? Overwhelmingly the latter.

How sustainable can AAA game scene can be with ever increasingly Hollywoodesque budgets for ever higher graphical fidelity that requires selling in the mid-millions at $60 just to break even? Not a lot.

I guess the question really becomes where in a respective game adding more realism starts to detract from overall "funness". I have to admit that some of the best games I've ever played are those that captivate you precisely because unrealistic things happen.

Games have become increasingly realistic over the last decade or so vs the two prior, so if anything I'd like less of that and more catchy, straight-forward gaming.

SWTOR tanked because of all the technical problems. It was one of the most broken MMO's and its still got all the problems it had on release day, I tried reinstalling it and its still the same problems. Unbelievable. For those that could play it that found no game at top level.

It was a decent single player game, that just wrote 10 or so different single player experiences where each was impacted by the fact it was actually an MMO, which just made it a bit or a lot worse depending on the missions.

I remember when playing GTR on max sim level that was really difficult. I infact prefer Dirt, at least I can accomplish something there.

Definitely recommend GTR.

For those of you pedantically hung up on using the word "realism", perhaps we should just say "less ridiculous".

Absolute realism, in most cases, is boring. Ok. We got that. Stop the straw men, please. If I say I want my shooting game "more realistic", instead of where I get shot 12 times, duck behind cover for 5 seconds, and magically be ok, that does not mean that I want or expect some ultra-realistic portrayal of all firearms, jams, weapon cleaning, etc. It just means find a way to make the more ridiculous aspects, less ridiculous.

Just because I say I don't want white, doesn't mean I then must want black. There are grey areas.

absolute realism is only fun if you are a pshyco killer on a population trimming mission with be killed in action or rot in jail result.

fantasy ridiculous play is only fun if you trying to escape from your daily life. chances are you are a kid who knows nothing better or an adult with serious real life issues.

balance is where the foundation based on realism and the game play based on exploting those foundations, right up to the fine line, right before it become ridiculous.



for the last time. more realism as an available options.

Realism in games sucks, yet backseat developers are always clamoring for more.

Take the OP's #2 issue; a sniper bullet has to hit twice center mass to kill. "Oh, it would be the coolest if it was a 1 shot kill like it would probably be in real life." Until you actually play the game, and everyone is a sniper, or everyone is constantly complaining about snipers.

So the game that was about squad tactics, now is a sniper camp-fest. Nobody will move down certain areas that are always watched by snipers. And in a week 90% of the population will be playing something else.

What sounds good, and what actually works is two very different things.

Part of the reason is that it goes like that is because the sniper rifles are too good at close range because of other choices they made. In practice you shouldn't find shooting below 300m even remotely effective. An assault rifle is a much better weapon within the 50m to 300m range especially when you add wind deflection and bullet drop mechanics along with realistic sites. The multiple hits mechanic is added because they didn't do the other elements of realism necessary to balance the weapon like it would be in real life.

not saying that this should be the only way the game should be. just saying that there should be an available option for this type of realism gameplay.

There already is.

You're just stringing words together that you have no idea the meaning of. The intermediate cartridge was brought in to play for volume of fire, not because of any ballistic deficiencies in a rifle cartridge.

"Herp derp can't hit anything below 300m with 7.62x51." ROFLMAO!

Gamers want to be the hero, not a faceless contributor of semi-aimed fire in a squad of faceless riflemen. With any gameplay that allows the player to stand out, an M25 is going to be a FAR superior weapon to a M16. If you are modeling actual deadliness and your gameplay allows the player to go around pointing and shooting, the power of 7.62x51 is not to be denied.
