Yea so unless you have a system like Skace....you will see performance issues

Damn... maybe I'll get it for the XBox then. Should run alright on that system, correct?

It'll probably run decent on the XBox but the view distances and graphical settings have been turned down. The fog is much closer in the X-Box version (much lower view distance) than most people are setting in the PC version.

Alright... hmmm.... I don't know what to get it on still. Maybe I'll put it up for a vote. What do you all think:

My System:

1.33ghz T-Bird
512mb RAM
geforce 3
game threatre XP
klipsch 4.1's
windows XP
17" flat screen monitor (not LCD)

vs.

XBox
21" TV

???

Please help I want this game but don't want to make the wrong purchase.

That is fine. My friend is running it on a PIII 700 mhz and a GF2 MX. He says it runs pretty good. Just make sure that if you get it, you get the NO-SAFEDISK crack (which has been endorsed on the official forums) because safedisk cuts 15% of your performance off. I don't have an Xbox, but I serously wonder if it can support all the commands this game has. I am pushing things all over my keyboard as it is now.

Without the no-safedisc hack, I am getting low framerates in many areas. Balmora or whatever (the first major town you go to) yields 12-20 fps outside, with the view distance at the halfway mark in the slider, and shadows fairly far down. Inside it's much better, 50-80fps, and outside of town in the wilderness it is usually 20-30 fps. Still, that is most unimpressive considering that I am running an xp1800+ and GF3 Ti-500.

I'm sick of safedisc. All it does is cause problems. It's ironic that those who pirate the game aren't hassled by incompatabilty problems.

What is safedisc supposed to do anyway? That is ridiculous (sp?) that it drops your frame rate by 10-15 FPS.

It's an anti-copy system. Basically software checks to make sure you have the CD physically installed and if not it won't let you play the game you purchased. It's not compatible with all CD drives and is just very inconvenience to consumers.

What characters are you using? I made a knight and I can't seem to advance in the fighter's guild anymore. If anyone is doing the fighter's guild quests and have advanced pretty far, shoot me a pm so I can ask you some questions. After a lot of exploring, I finally found this place called Mallagin (?) near Gnaar Mok. Some npc's brother went there to find wealth. I found no wealth. The guild quest is to get money for a debt this guy owed. I get to keep half. It's possible to pay it out of my own pocket, but I'd rather not as money is hard to come by. After a lot of saving, I have about 4000 gold, some magic weapons, and decent armor. Anyway, pm me if you've played that far.

edit: I tried an assassin at first, because I had visions of sneaking up on people and backstabbing. I did manage to sneak up on a guy and I got a critical hit. I don't know if that's automatic or not, because I only did it once, then I got frustrated. I managed to pick a lock and steal stuff from someone's house. I had to wait for all the guards to kind of face away and be a safe distance away. Also none of the townsfolk were near. That was kind of cool.

Is this thing buggy? I remember when I got daggerfall it was literally unplayable!

"Is this thing buggy? I remember when I got daggerfall it was literally unplayable!"

Simply put, No. The only thing I've run into that could be considered buggy is that, due to the complex world, you can get stuck on certian objects.

Example, I was trying to climb the side of a house and got stuck on a lamp post. There is a console command (fixme) which unsticks you.

Edit: Spoon, I don't have a clue about the fighter's quests, sorry. I'm the archmaster of house redoran and a champion of the imperial legion.

I am sooo hooked on this game right now. I have been spending hours just walking around, using my auto map, and just checking the landscape out. I have been playing for a few days now and I feel like I've barely seen 99% of the land...I love that. I even hung up that map that came with it so I can have an idea of where I am in Vvardenfell. The game is flat out beautiful, and while the framerates are not terribly high, it runs smoothly on my system @ 1600x1200@85hz with max view distance, shadows, and AI distance. If you enjoy very involved RPG's that allow you to do basically whatever you want, this is the game for you.

Also, not even counting the supposedly over 300 hours of gaming, this game comes with a full featured editor that lets anyone create their own lands and dungeons! Unfortunately, that's also the downside to getting the Xbox version....the editor is not included, and it's one of the reasons I got it on my PC instead of my Xbox.

Great game!

Insane3D,

When you say you feel like you've barely seen 99% of the land do you really mean that you've seen practically all of it already or was that a typo and you mean you've just seen about 1% ?

Also that resolution is insane. What are your framerates ?

Reminds me of Ultima 9. It was so fun to just explore the world especially since it was seemless (no load screens).

Well I bought Morrowind. Now I need only install it!

I was thinking of joining the imperial legion, but I didn't like the first quest. I figured out what I needed to do to get past that part.

Sorry, hehe. I knew I shouldn't post without getting some sleep from working all night..LOL! Yeah, I mistyped and I meant I had barely seen maybe 1% of the land.

As far as framerates, I'm not sure. I think to display them you need to modify something in the .ini file, but I haven't bothered. Strictly from feel, I would say it is in the mid 20's or so outside, and maybe 40-50 inside. I think the engine has a bit of trouble with overdraw. I think it renders a lot more outside than it needs to....like landscape that's off screen. This type of game doesn't really need blazing framerates though.

I have a pretty beefy system, but the game is running decently at 1600x1200 with every feature maxed out. So I would assume it is possible to get ok performance on a medium end system with the right settings. Other things...

- Run speed is slow, but will increase as you raise your althetics skill. There are also magic items, spells, etc. You can double your runspeed right off the bat by selecting the sign of the horse or some such.

- Game is very similiar to Daggerfall, but much more stable. Not perfectly stable, but very good.

- If you don't like walking between towns, you don't have to, but this is where the meat of the game is to me. The countryside is literally crawling with dungeons, quests, beasts, etc. Keep in mind as a Daggerfall game, there are no safety nets. You can create a lvl 1 character and walk right into a dragon's den. You will probably have a bad feeling before you do, but the game will allow you to do almost anything. Save often (in series to so that your only save wasn't 2.3 seconds before a nasty beastie sweeps from the sky and guts you for dinner. Forgot that lesson from Daggerfall, ouch)

- The graphics are simply awesome. The best I have ever seen. The water effect alone is worth buying the game (and needed hardware) for. It gets better the longer you look at it and play around with it.... Some downpoints though. Naked characters look crappy, very visible seams between arms and torso, etc. The shadows of characters also suck. They don't account for what the character is wearing, you always see a 'naked' shadow.

If you open up the Morrowind.ini file you will find an option to show the framerate. Just change the value from 0 to 1.

I'm running at 1280x1024 with 2xAA and I am getting between 20 and 35 FPS outdoors and 40+ FPS indoors. I would try 1600x1200 but my monitor doesn't have a great refresh rate The game is gorgeous though.
