I can't say I'm all that impressed. Now maybe this is just a bad screenshot and the trailer looks a hellava lot better - I'm assuming this is the case. But even so, that is one not very impressive screenshot ...

I hope nobody out there is taking the "which is the best engine?" thing personally. The ONLY reason to have any personal investement in such an argument is if you actually WORKED on one of the engines in question. Otherwise it's like people raving about which pro football team is better and taking it personally when they don't actually have anything to do with the teams... oh wait, people already do that.

By the way - Half-Life 2 is by far the best looking game, so the poll, in that respect at least, is quite correct. HL2 graphics do appear oddly weak in certain areas though - like that train ride in the begining - that is one of the least detailed train interiors I've ever seen ... It reminds me of the subway at the start of Blood II, which was REALLY weak ... But HL2 more than makes up for it in other areas/maps. Most realistic graphics I've yet seen.

I don't know what the problem in this discussion is, but the screenshot that link leads to is almost definitly from Unreal Tournament (the original..from like 1999? 2000?)

I fail to see how an engine technically released *after* Doom3's is "older"; perhaps you are referring to it being less advanced in some technical sense? Doom3's rendering style (with its heavy focus on dynamic shadowing and use of standardized pixel shaders for all lighting) is *different*, but not necessarily better for all applications, and it's not really a "new" idea (ie, the concept was not invented for Doom3, although this is probably the first game that's used something like this in real time).

I would put it this way: HL2's engine is, at a low level, more similar to previously released 3D game engines than Doom3's is. This does NOT automatically make Doom3's engine "better", or make HL2 "less advanced".

What make Diii's engine 'better' is technical and has been addressed in a few threads . . . . my opinion is based on what i read and see

Oh, I see -- it's "technical". I guess I wouldn't understand it with "just" a bachelor's degree and years of real-world software engineering experience. :disgust:

Try me.

no idea what you understand or not but you misunderstand ME as usual . . . and jump to incorrect conclusions.

it's 'technical" and i don't remember all the details offhand and am too lazy to look them up cause i am playing Far Cry (FINALLY "getting into" it ~"Fort" level)

You're the one with the doubts . . . . i'm convinced the Doom iii is a "better" and more a"advanced" engine . . . but i just don't care to prove it to you (even IF i could).

YOU ARE A FREAKIN MORON. Those are UNREAL TOURNAMENT screenshots, not UNREAL ENGINE screenshots.[/quote]

If I was standing in front of you, no way you'd be willing to say that to my face. Do you feel big calling people names behind your monitor, tough guy?

As for my being a moron - on the first page of this thread there is an html link for Unreal 3. If you click on THAT link, it takes you to a page for the Unreal 3 video and a link labeled Unreal 3 SCREENSHOTS. Do you understand the words I am typing now? "Unreal 3 SCREENSHOTS?"

THAT is the link that I posted. I THOUGHT the screenshot looked really bad, but if there was a mistake, it was made by A: the website that MISLABLED the link, and B: YOU for calling me a moron without knowing what the f_ck you are talking about.

Haha, Thats like a 5 or 6 year old game.

http://scr3.golem.de/screenshots/0408/unrealengine3/RagDoll.jpg

(You mihgt have to wait a bit, if uyour 56k) It's not ht ebst shot of the engine, but it demonstrates a few key features (Namely the physics)

Spend however long you need to to d/l the demo, It blew my minde.

Well, now I feel like I have to. The shot you posted looks nice enough.

"Burden of proof"?

If you're gonna insist that Doom3 has a "better" and "more advanced" engine than HL2 (which, according to you, is "old"), but your response to "what makes it better?" is "I don't want to tell you, because I know it's better", maybe you should rethink your position or actually find some support. :disgust:

just checked in . . . .

i have all the support i need; for one, doom iii's lighting and shadows are unquestionably superior to HL2's . . . you're the one that is responding as though he were threatened.

i gave my OPINION that Doom iii is more "advanced" than HL2 . . . . i don't need to show you anything further (there are plenty of threads discussing the technical advantages of each engine) . . . . and IF i did - as in SO many other threads - you ignore it anyway.

i'm back to FC

wow, the only thing that kept me from playing the original battlefield was the cartoony graphics. Those look amazing!

I just played the FlatOut Demo and I was very impressed.

The graphics looked great. Simplistic, for those of you HL2 graphics fans, you should love these as well. And it has great performance on my comp while looking great. Turned up everything with res at 1280x960 with AA and AF in game set to the highest as well as triple buffering.

One of the greatest things about the graphics is the level of interactivity with the world. Everything that looks breakable - breaks! That is amazing just by itself. The cars also show great amount of damage. Although the car never dies, nor do you. But that's OK. More mayhem to enjoy.

You can also go outside the circuit and in between the roads of the circuit. This is such a great foundation for a great racer. I don't particularly like the game, but all these graphical advancements do carry a lot of innovation that many racer developers should employ in each of their games.
