Motherboard/CPU Compatibilty Question

I have a MSI K7T Pro 2A (KT133 Chipset) and wanted to upgrade my processor to a higher speed Duron. AMD has a socket 1.3GHz Duron (200FSB), however, it is not not listed as tested with my Motherboard at AMD's website.

Is my board so old that AMD did not test this combo? Will this processor still be compatible with my board?

I always look at the compnay who made hte board..MSI in your case. according to the latest bios that board supports the XP +2400 and the +2600 (266fsb) so I'd be blow away if the durons aren't compatible. That is Bios version 3.6 and is availible to download at www.msicomputer.com

His board has a KT133 chipset, NOT the KT133a that came on later boards.


Because the price of a low AthlonXP and Durn are about the same. Your best bet is to get a new board. Even if you could not afford new ram, which there is some cheap DDR out there now, you could get a KT266a that supports DDR and SDRAM That way you could get a AthlonXP and get a much better bang for your buck.

I should have known to check MSI's site, which indicates the Duron 1.3 is not compatible-only the Spitfire Duron's are. However, I can use up to 1.4GHz Athlon, but currently that CPU is $89.00 and at that price I would be better off buying a budget board and low end XP CPU.
