Motherboard dead?

Basically my dad has used the computer 10 mins before and then he shut it off. When I tried to turn it back on there was no video. I restarted it again and noticed the hard drive didn't spin up either. My dad was like use the norton utility disc and I didn't think it was going to do anything and noticed that neither of my CD drives would open. I tested the power supply and it was working fine. I notice that the cpu fan spins and so does my graphics card. I checked the power supply for bulging caps and that was also fine. The molex won't open my cd drive but will power any fan I have. My graphics card is putting out a bit of heat and so is my cpu so I know that it is getting power. My northbridge is putting out heat as well. The only thing is I'm still not getting a post. There is no beep for it to start. Also there when I took out the ram there was no beep that is usually associated with it. I'm thinking that the motherboard is probably dead. I noticed that on a certain chip there was a hole? lol think it might have blew.

Anyone know a good motherboard to buy as a replacement. I'm using a Socket 478, AGP 8x, DDR. Overclocking with voltage options would be nice as I would like to try but if not I'm fine with stock. Preferably under $90 with shipping. Live in NJ.

I'm not entirely sure that it is NOT your power supply.

You see, when you push the buttons on your cdrom drives, the drive should open regardless of the condition of your motherboard. Also, the fact that your hard drive doesn't spin is a further indicator that something other than your motherboard may be wrong. Remember, there is more than one power rail on a PSU. You could have blown a rail and still have power to the motherboard. The problem is, a PSU is known to take out other hardware when it goes.

I think if it were mine, I'd get out my handy dandy multimeter and test the output on all three power rails. This is just the beginning but it will help you sort things out.

eh maybe but there's no smoke and no bad caps. Actually it's quite neat inside heh. Powers the fan on the molex...

It was either the power supply or the Motherboard. The power supply was single rail with 20 amps on it. If it's powering the fan I don't see how a little more load isn't doable on the molex... blah I'll probably get a multimeter if it isn't the motherboard. The motherboard has a hole in a chip though... It's next to the exact same chip and I read the numbers on it. Same for the parts that I could read. Then one has some type of hole and the other doesn't. It's even kind of irregular. I took a paperclip to it to poke it and this black powder rubbed off when I scraped it. heh.

I also thought taht the cd-rom should open either way but eh..
