Motherboard for dual high end ATI

I need a gaming motherboard (for 4770k) that I'll be using with two ATI 290s. I'm looking at Maximus VI Hero at the moment, but read that when you have 2 cards running, they run at 8x instead of 16x.

Are there any motherboards that will get better performance out of these cards (ie. both cards running at 16x). Is there much of a difference for gaming in running the cards at 16x vs 8x? I'm open to suggestions on any other mobos for this.

There's no reason to need 16x PCI lanes on any graphics cards. Bottlenecks don't even appear at 8x in the most demanding games on the market IIRC.
