Wait, is this a question about an OEM copy of Windows?
Can I pop the old HDD into a brand new computer I've built?
Of course. The question, I suppose, is will the OS work on the new computer?

No, it isn't OEM. I just wanted to make sure that, if I built a new computer, the boot HDD will function as before.

No prob not unless its the same mobo. Worth a try i guess

You prob will have to reinstall the OS. But you could just install OS on fresh hard drive and use that hard drive as 2nd drive.

Yup. I've had good luck in the past changing machines like that, but it's a crap shoot, and nothing's guaranteed.

Whether Windows will boot or not depends on how similar the "old" and "new" disk controllers are. There's ways to work around this. It also depends on the OS and whether you had advanced warning that you were going to move the OS disk to a new motherboard.

If the motherboard died then just remove the hard drive, set the jumper on the back to slave and add it to the primary drive on another computer. Once you boot up you'll see the additional drive, which is yours. You can access anything you want on it after that and burn to disc or whatever...That's the easiest way.
