I've been looking at the gigabyte gaming 5 board and the Asus z170 pro gaming. Besides not having a dvi port the gaming 5 got decent reviews.

The Asus will cost me $109 at microcenter if I buy it with the i7 6700k. The gigabyte board is $159 on newegg and $139 at microcenter with the CPU bundle.

Seeing you have a gigabyte board do you recommend it over the Asus? Port wise they both have the same amount of ports and to me they would function the same. Just can't connect with whether the extra $30 for the gigabyte is a better option.

I am a equal motherboard household. Well, except for MSI. I do discriminate against them.

I have a Gigabyte one in my PC, a Asrock in one son's computer, and a Asus in the other son's computer.

Both boards would work fine. They seem to have mostly the same features. However, the Gigabyte board is "pertier" if you are trying to match a theme. A lot of time the extra cost of motherboards are due to it being more colorful. If I was buying, at the current prices you referenced, I would choose the Asus.

The Asus board will have the most advanced BIOS where you can tweak and change everything under the sun, and then some. The Gigabyte BIOS is more conservative compared to Asus.

Thanks for the feedback. I too don't discriminate and my asrock here has been really nice.

I'm not trying to match a theme so I think I'll go with the Asus from microcenter. The total comes out to $434 for the board and the i7 6700k. Too bad they don't have 16gb of g skill ram there so I would buy everything there. They do have 16gb of 3200 evga ram but I didn't see that as compatible on the Asus ram list.

If you are buying it locally, you can try ram that's not on ram list. It could very well work. If it doesn't, you can just return it if Microcenter is that close to you.

It's a lot easier than having to wait for week for it to get back to Newegg and waiting for a refund.

True I could try that but I'm pretty sure the g skill will work from newegg since it seems to be the most popular. Most of the list on the asus site had corsair and g skill listed at 4gb*4 but not even one evga model tested.

Motherboard companies only test a very limited amount of modules.

You can also go to the RAM manufacturer's website, and use their memory finder tool. The manufacturers test their products on the various motherboards to ensure compatibility. For example, if you use G Skill's memory tool, they will guarantee compatibility with a large selection of their different modules that Asus never tested.

But G Skill is good ram too if you're willing to wait. I would personally try the EVGA ram if the price was competitive, and if I could return it locally.

People usually only review things when they hate them. DOA doesn't even warrant a review, unless the company refuses to replace it or is a big hassle.

Its a complicated part, DOA happens. Kids buy their parts and cry when it doesn't work and suddenly MSI or Asus are the worst companies in the world (even though they are probably replaced 99% of the time.)

I have the H170 version of the ASUS PRO GAMING series and it is a wonderful board. It's the same as the Z170 you're looking at except no overclocking, which was fine for me. It has been very stable and ASUS has been updating the BIOS regularly. Rock solid. I like ASUS' QFan control in the BIOS. System is dead silent except when gaming. Pretty easy peasy.

Seems like that's what I'll try and pick up tomorrow if they are open. I'm tired of researching the vast flavors of motherboards. My next plan is just to pop a new gpu in there. Probably won't be able to do that until mid July or August at the rate things are going with their releases.
