Motherboards confirmed working with 16GB

Hi All,
With the Intel 4 series motherboards, im keen to get a system and put 16gb in it.

Ive been looking at http://www.ocztechnology.com/p..._upgrade_16gb_quad_kit

However as per this post (http://www.ocztechnologyforum....0&posted=1#post289370) - no-one has been able to confirm for me that 16GB will run at full speed in any particular MB. (and also a very odd individual who is offended by the word rubbish)

The reason im cautious about this is that i have previous put 8GB into various motherboards that "support" 8GB, only to find they either dont post, or run very slow (BIOS updates fixed both of these cases, but 6 months after i purchased the systems... and alot less hair!)

So anyhoo - has anyone out there sucessfully run 16GB in any of the P43/45 boards... and if so, could you pass me on the details (ie which mb and which RAM)

Thanks

Hi, welcome to anandtech. Unfortunately for you, less than 1% of the planet even has 8GB of RAM in their computer, and most likely, it's closer to 1/10th of a percent.<<-- That's assuming we're ignoring servers, of course. Anyway, Tony, who is the top tech @ OCZ, would be one of the only people on the planet to have much experience with running 16GB on a desktop board. You'll have to either keep "bumping" that thread, or send him a PM or two. And while it isn't the same OCZ RAM you linked to, the G.Skill rep here says that their 4X4GB RAM works fine with Asus P5Q's. Good luck.

Hey,
thanks for the reply.... been a long time lurker here at anandtech... but never had a question until now.

I run a small IT consultancy, providing consulting services to larger organisations, so we use lots of virtuals - hence the requirement. (We currently have a bunch of machines with 8gb - which was a hassle too). So while i realise this isnt common, there must be some demand, otherwise there wouldnt be 4x4gb RAM kits!

I spose i dont understand why OCZ, G.Skill, Kingston etc dont specify the boards that have been tested with the 4x4 kits.... as they are clearly and expensive item and compatibility is vital. (and as you say, so few people use this type of config, its hard to get community feedback, so manufacturer compatibility details are vital!)

Anyhoo - thanks for the link to the newegg site with the comment about the Asus board... thats exactly what i wanted to see, and i'll now buy that board and that RAM.

A quick look shows that gskill 16GB kit saying it supports P35, X38 and X48 boards. but i would check with an individual board for compatibility... (bios)
And a quick look in newegg power search feature allowed me to search for only boards that support 16GB of ram:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...rtyCodeValue=727:10689

also, gskill official response in newegg reviews reads:
"we recommend using P45 motherboard (asus P5Q deulxe is the best) for this memory. because the 680i and 650i issue, we don't recommend to run 4 dimm on those two motherboard. we test P5Q deluxe, no problem on vista-u 64."

And OCZ 16GB kit has this in its official description:
"Currently only P45 and P43 chipsets support 8GB/16GB RAM densities. In order to boot on some motherboards this product is programmed to 667MHz; to run at 800MHz you will need to manually set the speed to 800MHz and voltage to 1.8V in your BIOS. "

yer, i know what your saying mate.... but all the previous motherboards "supported" 8GB, until you put 8GB in there, it runs pathetically slow, and the support personnel who dont speak english ask for a "screenshot" of it running slow.... (WTF?) i'll never be buying gigabyte again... products arent bad... but geez the support... terrible!

anyhoo.... my point is that the official description is all well and good.... but when it doesnt boot or runs at a crippled speed, my previous support experience indicates that the motherboard manufacturer and ram manufacturer wont help - so if i can get a confirmed combo that works first (as per the newegg post that both myocardia and you pointed out) - im going to take that.

Now just need to track down someone to get the ram from, as newegg dont seem to have any!

You also might want to check into this. Read from this thread. A gentelman named IDontCare, here in Anandtech, has some great info in this particular matter as he uses this product. It just may be right up your alley and it may well be a better solution to more ram without motherboard issues that you are refering to.

"Both use our patent-pending memory management (up to 512 GB) to create a virtual disk out of RAM. The RAM disk appears like a physical hard disk to the operating system and programs. You choose its size (depending on the amount of RAM in your system), drive letter, and file system. You can copy, move and delete files on it. Like a physical disk, a RAM disk can also be shared so as to be accessed by other computers on a network."

Info from 1st link....

Thanks for that, its not quite a fit for my situation, but good info none-the-less.

This leads to my next question... i cannot find a wholesaler or retailer in Australia who sells with the G.Skill or OCZ 4x4GB packages, and ive also just learned that amazon will not ship memory products to Australia.

As luck would have it, im in canada at the moment on holiday and will be in/around Tronno (as the locals seem to pronounce it) over the next 3 weeks.... ive had a bit of a google for hardware retailers, but just found your run-of-mill high turnover hardware sellers.... not the type that stocks a 4x4gb ram kit. If there are any tronno locals out there, can you suggest a retailer that may stock "higher end" products such as this... or at least be willing to get it before the 16th of oct ?

Thanks

Does it have to be 4x4 or can you buy 4 4GB sticks? Stupid question, I know. How long will you be there? Maybe you can order fro DirectCanada or NCIX online and have them ship it to you.

nar, dont mind if its 4x4 pack, or if buy 4 x 4 gb sticks individually (as long as it comes out to a similar price)

I've checked directCanada and they dont stock it, NCIX and newegg doesnt have it in stock at the moemnt and wont take pre-orders....

because im living out of hotels in Quebec, montreal, tronno... it would really be preferably to find a retailer with stock! There must be one specialised retailer out there.... surely!

Worst case, I see that Dell offers the PE 1900 server with 16 GB of RAM and a Quad-Core Xeon installed and no OS. The PE 2900 III, two hundred dollars more for the base server, is offered with 48 GB of RAM.
