because current less-lethal technology is nowhere near effective enough to be substitutes for conventional firearms in a situation that requires an armed response.

when we get phasers with a stun setting we can talk but until then the only niche they will have is in an escalated situation where you can use a less-lethal option without endangering your life should it fail (and they do have very high failure rates in the wrong conditions).

I would have felt very sick if the cop shot the guy with rubber bullets only to see the piece of garbage turn and shoot him back with real bullets.

Bad people are bad and they don't deserve the same level of love and respect as others. This guy was aiming to kill someone. In this case, thankfully he was stopped. Who knows if he'd already killed others in the commission of similar crimes.

Good riddance.

Yeah, because if you're up against a criminal with a gun that fires real bullets you definitely want to do something to him that hurts like hell, but doesn't incapacitate him. No way that could possibly go wrong.

FFS, this was a simple gun-enhanced brake check, that's all. The shooter of that poor motorcycle enthusiast will get raped in civil court. His was a heinous overreaction, almost Alex Lein level in its unprompted viciousness.

You should only shoot guys when they're walking through your neighborhood while wearing a K-Mart brand, thug wear over-garment. Everyone know this.

This innocent brake check was done solely so those two could perform harmless and entertaining cycle stunts, for which they needed the temporary loan of the first guy's scooter.

The basic issue is that which assuredly stops an attacker, has some risk of death. Often the best option in non lethal is extremely no questions asked lethal and a warning before using it. Dirty Harry and the 44 magnum speech, lots of non lethal deterring with that one.
