mountain bike advice, please?

i really have no knowledge of bikes... i'd appreciate if any of you can help me out. i think this item is a good deal bike but who knows. the auction ends soon tonight. thanks for your help, guys.

Why does it have "MARIN" on the frame if it's a Marlin? Anyway, buying a used bike is a bit dangerous, especially sight unseen. Who knows how he rode it? I suggest supporting your local bike shop. If you really have no knowledge, start reading up about bikes on the internet, then start there. If you ride alot, being on the good side of your local bike shop is a godsend.

Marin is the name of the company that makes the bike. The seller screwed up the name in the listing.

Anywho, heres a bunch of reviews that seem to indicate that the bike is a good deal if it is in good shape.

Significantly larger, though. Definitely nicer if it fits. As long as we keep upping the ante,
this is even far better. I have ridden one for about five years and there is no finer hardtail on earth.

hmm, very nice bikes. but maybe i should have mentioned that my budget is about $300, +/- 50..... i'm only a beginner, so i wouldn't be able to appreciate all the fine detail and craftsmanship anyway. thanks a lot for the tips tho.

The LBS is definitely your friend. Lots of them sell used bikes along with new bikes, and sometimes you can find a real bargain on something that's in great shape with lots of good stuff already on it.

I recently bought a seat, seat post, and neck at one shop around here, and then I asked about an under-the-seat bag. I looked at one that had the shop's name embroidered on the side, and said, "I'm guessing you guys like this one."

The guy said, "we do," and gave me the $15 bag for free. Nice, it was just like getting a 10% discount for nothing.

I've found that most bike store guys are really cool and very knowledgeable.

They'll also help make sure you get a bike that fits you.
