Very gradually over a period of weeks my mouse started losing tracking or skipping. It happened so slowly it took me a while to realize that something was wrong.
I kept checking the the optics to make sure nothing was in the way, but could never find anything.
Eventually it got so bad I was determined to go buy a new mouse.
Then I noticed the table.
More specifically the table surface.
Oil from my hand had accumulated in such a thick layer that it had left a shiny sheen over the whole area that was interfering with the optics.
Scraped it off and suddenly the mouse was good as new. It was amazing how much better my whole computing experience was with precise tracking again.
