Mouse input questions

How many reports/sec do the Microsoft optical mice do? I have an ambidextrous corded one and it kind of sucks, although that's probably due to my display and 60 hz vsync than anything else.

Also, what is/are the difference/s between raw input, Dinput, Xinput, and windows messaging?

Finally, what surfaces do laser mice not work on? What surfaces do optical mice not work well with?

This is the best way to check how many reports/second your mouse is sending. Its possible to "overclock" either the PS2 port or USB depending on which you use. It is possible the mouse might be locked at a certain polling rate, although if we are talking about the old Microsoft mice, they are not.

Always use raw input unless you want software mouse acceleration.

Thanks for the reply
Anyway... what is wrong with Sw mouse acceleration? Doesnt win7 use xinput?

Nothing is wrong with software mouse acceleration. It is just a preference thing. The general consensus is that for most people, you don't want any mouse acceleration in first person shooters because it can jack things up. There are quite a few professionals that use mouse acceleration, mostly in Quake.

If you are in the majority and don't want any acceleration, raw input is the cleanest method. It has the least amount of things that can go wrong.

Typically 125. Most that do faster let you set it in software.

Not sure how windows messaging applies. Xinput is newer than DirectInput, was released for/with the XB360 controller, and they are different. DirectInput is becoming a legacy feature, implemented with API wrappers, these days, and is getting less and less new software support.

When a game only supports the XB360 controller, and nothing else, it basically means they did the work for Xinput (needed for the console anyway), without adding any DirectInput support.

It varies, but generally, laser are worse on cloth.

Do you think that 1 inch should always equal 1 inch? I do, so acceleration is absolutely positively 100% wrong; it's doubly worse that you have to use registry hacks to turn it off; and triply worse that they changed the input behavior for mice that games rely on. MS FTL; Mark C FTW!

If you are in the majority and don't want any acceleration, raw input is the cleanest method. It has the least amount of things that can go wrong.
I don't think the majority are going to be willing to merge reg files to use their mice the same as in prior OSes.

I was under the impression that raw input doesn't need any "fixes" for 1:1 mouse input like the other methods can. The game uses the direct response from the mouse, and unless your mouse has hardware acceleration (very rare), it is going to be 1:1 movement.

Not quite. Most brand new games should work fine. In that case, though, there is still the problem that Vista and 7 [and apparently 8] have no means of disabling acceleration on the desktop, when 2D precision is needed. People paying thousands of dollars for CAD/photo/modeling software really shouldn't need to resort to registry hacks.

Turning off Enhanced pointer precision does indeed disable acceleration on the desktop. The CPL fix is needed only if you are playing an older game that uses the legacy mouseparms commands. Xp and up handle these commands differently and it is what causes the acceleration. Interestingly enough, the commands that were intended to disable acceleration in Quake was what enabled it in the newer operating systems.

Nice

My mouse is 5400DPI and one dog hair "short haired mini dachsund and it gets stuck you keep having to blow under neath it and clean the pad,, Im changed to cotton now. its working ok,,,,,, but its retarded how the mouse stops moving,,, that is one bad thing about the Mamba

In Mamba 2012 its optical and laser 6400DPI 140 dollars,, thats how much I payed for this. My copperhead and lachesis wired were better I had pinkie buttons . but no pinkie on mamba ,,, I lost 2 of my game keys
now what I spend another 140 for the 2012 version ... thats 300 bucks almost in mouse Ive spent,, The newer version also makes battery last longer and charge quicker, and you can change colors of scroll wheel be different colors like green red blue etc

You guys think the dual , optical and laser might fix my problem about being too sensitive.

update:

Im using cotton now and its great, until it gets stuck cuz of some object on the pad.

Mamba 2012 with optical and laser and fixes maybe now it wont have this problem, but we dont know until you poay 140 dollars...... darn I payed soo much for this compared to other mouse over years ,,

Use a cotton pad it will be nice. Polling Rate is I think what your talking about Razer or high end mouse set it in the razer panel to what you want. 1000hz polling rate. gl
