Mouse problem

Hi all,
I'm having some trouble with my mouse at the moment.
I'm on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, using a MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 USB mouse.
The problem is that sometimes, the mouse will go to the bottom left corner of the screen by itself and insist on staying there no matter how much I move the mouse away from the corner. Less frequently, it will also move to the top right corner of the screen.
The problem seems to happen randomly and goes away after a few minutes.

Can anybody shed some light on this problem?

Thanks!

Addition Info: It just started creeping towards the corner again and this time I pulled out the USB mouse and it stopped. Does this sound like a hardware problem with the USB mouse? Any opinions would be appreciated.

Optical mice work by comparing images against eachother taken at many times a second, if a piece of dust or grit is in the optical 'eye' and big enough to influence the pictures, then it blowing in the breeze from your fan may be causing it to think it's moving when it isnt. Turn it upside down and use a cotton bud to clean out the eye - did that work?

Also if you are on a really shiny similar surface with no noticable difference (like a white perspex sheet) it can confuse itself too.

Is it a cordless mouse by any chance?

I've had a problem with the mouse creeping. I turned off the 'fast initialization' option. Go to Device Manager, expand mice and other pointing devices>properties>Advanced settings tab, you'll see an option there. See if that works.

Dell laptops are known for the 'Auto' mouse movements.

This is due to a conlflict with the Nipple and the touch pad drivers.

Firstly disable the nipple and the touch pad, boot up the laptop, then plug in the USB mouse - everything should work fine.....if it doesn't power up with a PS2 plugged in the nswop out with a USB.

I know it sounds strange, but it normally works (no perm fix that I'm aware of) I normally come across this issue on the D600, X300 and the Inspiron models

i've had wierd problems with various mice flippin' out and scrolling all over the place. i've discovered recently (at least in my case) that ifi press the scroll button down, the problems stops. before that, i would just sit here like a dumbass and wait til it stops psycho-scrolling.

Appreciate your replies

I think overlordstu had a good point. I had a look at the optical eye (nearly blinded myself cause I forgot to unplug it first). It looks clean but next time it starts creeping I'll see what's going on.
It's behaving at the moment so I'm happy.

if the mouse pointer started creeping down the display on its own, i'd run out of the house and call the emergency services and a church
