Moving Companies

I will be moving shortly, I made the mistake of filling out a online moving estimate form and now I'm getting calls from everyone and their mama's....literally 40 calls with in an hour......

Depending on which person I speak with, they either charge by per LBS or per sq ft/cubic meter....of course the footage guys say that you get screwed with lbs and vice versa....

I"m getting the range of 0.50 per lbs......

Please share your advice on what to look for and any referrals would be appreciated.

I'm really leaning paying extra and going with one of the big guys...Mayflower...United.....hoping not to get jacked....

Your title confuses me. Are you moving? What kind of companies do you need advice on?

All right, I won't be a huge jerk, I'll give some advice too. I'd go with the larger, more well known company. If, God forbid, they break something, you usually will have a better experience getting restitution for it, from what I've heard.

Also, make sure if you don't tip them, you at least order them a pizza or something. You shouldn't have to, but it's always better to have happy movers.

Mistakes made...recommendations...negotiation.....any information that you think I could find helpful......

In my previous moves I've U-Hauled it...so I have never used a professional moving company before....

I'm getting bombarded by calls now and I don't really know who to believe...

Don't rely on those online estimates. Get a moving company rep come to your house and do a real estimate. Also, check out Moving Scam.

# Get a binding estimate in advance specifying the cost of your move.
# Check to make sure the mover you pick is a member of the American Moving and Storage Association's "Certified Mover Program."
# In your contract, require the mover to pay a penalty if he doesn't deliver your belongings on or before a specific date.
# Buy replacement value insurance on your possessions, in case something breaks during the move.
# Before you choose a moving company, get a clear understanding from that mover what happens if something is broken that you've packed yourself.
# When the mover drops off your furniture at your new residence, do not sign the release form until you've examined your furniture piece by piece.
# The best way to protect crystal, china, and any other extremely valuable and delicate possessions is to move them yourself in your own car.
