Well, I am thinking of buying a mp3 player or a recordable MD player. I will listen to mp3 at most time. For MD player, I will plug it in the sound card and record the MD. But I don't want to keep that much MD disks. For mp3 player, the sound quality is not that good. I mean if I sometimes buy an original CD, I can record it a MD which can give a better quality. So can someone help me to decide which to buy? Also if you know, can you name a a few models that are good. I really know nothing about the models. Thanks for your reply.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages... here's a quick, simple breakdown.

if you're an audiophile... go w/ the MiniDisc player

If you're an Mp3-freak - duh, go MP3...

I personally would go w/ the MiniDisc player.. I find them to be a lot cooler You can easily get SHARP and SONY models that would do both recording and playback for under 200 dollars. Very good deals out there - however, the downside would be the endless MDs you'd have laying around... kinda like a 35mm camera (MD player) and a digital cam (MP3 player)... if you ever have song/picture that you messed up on, you can just delete it, and reuse that slot for another song... can't do that w/ an MD player

Verdict : MD Player - small discs are cool [/b]

despite what sony says, nothing that moves is "skip proof". i have one of their higher end cd players and despite the highly touted "g-protection," it does skip occasionally if i run too long. so if you're active, i'd go with the mp3. no moving parts, no skipping.

i doubt you'll notice the difference in sound quality if you use normal headphones or earbuds or whatever. if you're like me, and use it in the city, the outside noise is enough to cancel any significant quality advantage. then again, i'm not an audiophile... maybe you have sennheiser cans or something.

mp3 players are worthless unless you get one that will hold a decent amount of memory. Meaning you probably have to go out to buy more.

I'd recommend the Nomad Jukebox or whatever it's called, it holds 6gb of music. A good amount of songs can be held there, but from what i read in the AT review, it has it's problems. If i had to choose, id pick an Md over mp3 player anyday.

I'm in the MD corner simply because the media is cheaper (I'm comparing a 76min MD vs. a 64meg memory card). Even though I know MD is rewritable, I still like to keep older mixes on discs and maybe come back to listen to them later.

mp3 of course Personally, i don't plan on buying a car or living room mp3 player until they make affordable 500mb-2gb models.

i'd go mp3, i bought a recordable sony MD
the big draw back i forgot about when i was comparing my options is that it takes 1 hour to record 1 hours worth of music.
you can send a hours worth of music to a mp3 player in a fraction of the time.
i don't have that kind of time anymore to make mixes

I agree with the recording time on a MD...that's sick, an hour to record an hour...it's like writing to a 1x burner EEEeek I'd personally go with an mp3 player with USB connection. transfers songs in a split second. there are a couple of cheap ones out there right now, check the hot deals forum

I like my MD player/recorder a lot, but then again the Jukebox is nice too and stores more songs.

I'd go with the MD as I have serveral.

it only skips if you intend to *run* with it. But if you run dont' bother with MD then.

The disks are cheap. You can edit easily enough. RW to them about a mill time. Most of the models have a cool remote. The playback times on them are getting much better. I like the way you can just swaps MD's and don't need to d/l them etc.

But the USB mp3's are faster but you do have to wait for them to change. Don't know about the exact time though. But the MD real time recorind does suck a bit though. just burn the songs to RW or CDR and stick the optical in and just let it record and leave it

The quality is better with better headphones I like. NO MATTER WHAT YOU GET ALWAYS spend the extra £30+ on a pair of decent head phones. You can easily tell the sound difference. The ones you get are normally cheapo ones or not that top end quality so buy a pair of new headphones if you go either MD or mp3.

Its well worth the money for the quality.

You can get a Rio Volt. That one plays CD Players, MP3s and Windows Media files that have been burned onto a disk. I have one and it works out great!

I suggest you get an MD player. I have the Sony 900 (red) and I like it a lot. As for making mixes, yes I have to agree that real-time recording sucks in this sense. But since MD media is so cheap, I'd imagine you'd keep your mixes intact for a reasonable amount of time. With Mp3 players you gotta keep getting rid of whatever's on the player if you want a different list >> memory is expensive. Sound quality is not that good.

Here's what I do to solve my problems with the real-time recording handicap,

I make separate lists that that are <= 74 X 2 minutes long*, and use my optical connection and just let it record when I go to sleep. When I wake up, I have it on the MD and erase any unnecessary track marks. Yes it's somewhat an inconvenience, no pain no gain.

* the new ones have MDLP which is 2X and 4X compression, allowing you to hold more music on the same media (yes even old old MDs that were made before this higher compression scheme was invented work too!)

Try getting 148 minutes of high quality music on an mp3 player. Ok let's say you get about 120 minutes on it and you decide you wanted to change mixes and you do that say 10 times, now isn't that a pain in the ass? Now consider the fact that you want want to keep those mixes (you're going to have to save those playlists and manage them), that's more of a hassel don't you think?

Just my opinion. Good luck.

Disclaimer: I'm not hating on you mp3 guys, mp3 kicks ass. In fact, I use (HQ versions) to record to my MD player.
