i'm looking to get a portable audio device, something flash based. i was thinking of getting iriver 800 series but then noticed that the price and size are not that different than a pocket pc. any one use their pda as music player? (office, working out)

Cuz flash memory is not suceptible to shakage. HDD players with moving parts will start skipping when you exercise with them. Dont believe those dancing ipod commercials - when you move the ipod around like that for more than a minute it will start skipping.

true, but 20GB compared to 256mb or 512mb flash? i'd rather take the chance of the hdd breaking IMO.

I love my ipod but before I got the ipod I used my Ipaq with a 1 gig CF2 card from IBM (mini HD) and the sound on the ipaq was fantastic! But if all you want to do is listen to music then an MP3 player makes more sense.

Ive used my iPaq often as a MP3 player... and it works fine. A 1GB CF card and Im set, I dont need much more music then that at any one time, plus I use the ppc for so many other things.

True. Plus the PPC was so much louder than the ipod. I had some 3rd party plugins to enhance the sound and a pretty decent equalizer.

Make sure you turn the display off while you listen, otherwise your battery life will be even worse than one of those hd based players. I've never had a storage problem myself, a couple themed sd cards are more than enough if you just buy occasional CDs and rip your favorite tracks. It's largely the big music thieves who need to give up battery life for the HD based players IMHO.

i have a hp 2215 and i use it all the time. its got excellent sound, it is more versitile then just a mp3 player. ive had a couple archos and an ipod and its nice to have the space but when i cant fit a couple cds at cd quality on a sd card, and it takes 2minutes to swap in new music off my computer, there is no real advantage for me wit a hd based mp3 player. the only time i dont use my pda is when im running cus with my luck ill end up dropping it and destroying my screen.
and i found a program that turns the display completely (not just the backlight) off but still lets u play music or w/e. saves battery life

Yeah, I used to turn off the light and programmed the button on my old ipaq 3650. Plus I had the PCCARD sleeve with the extra battery and the dual PCCARD sleeve with the extra battery so I was always prepared. I havent touched the ipaq in 7 months since i lost my job and even before that I had gotten an ipod so I dont use it for music anymore. i also use the 1gig microdrive in my camera now so the ipaq is collecting dust. Hmmm. I wonder if the batteries still work.

I have an IPOD 20 gb model and jog for 45 minutes everyday, I've never experienced any problems with skipping. Then again, I do use the belt clip, so there is not a *ton* of movement.

Same here. I've shook mine on purpose and jog woth it also and it never skipped. I smacked it pretty hard once and it just shut down. Works fine. Never heard a skip from the ipod unless I ripped a bad mp3.

It depends on whether you will only listen to music.

I have an iPAQ 3955 that I have had for about 2 years. It serves well as a GUI Home Theater Remote ( aka Pronto ), GPS receiver, eBook reader, Dictionary, Translator, Media Player, and Time Waster.

I have the CF sleeve with extra battery and several 256, 512, & 1 GB SD cards. I use PocketMusic. It has some playability issues ( ends are clipped off some songs ) but it looks and feels like WinAmp.

If you get an iRiver or similar, you cannot expand the memory on it. I would get atleast a 1 GB model.

$400 will get you a used iPAQ 3955, CF sleeve, extra battery, and 1 GB SD card. I don't have a clue about the battery life since I have never listened to music for more than 10 hours in a stretch. With my
1600 mAh and 1840 mAh batteries, I am guessing a minimum of 40 hours play time since after 10 hours I only drained 30 % of the 1840 mAh and the internal was still 100 %. I have a spare 920 mAh just in case.

PDA will get you a much nicer player GUI but is pretty large compared to an iRiver. If you have a card reader, all you have to do is dump files onto the SD card from your PC

I had a PPC and about 6 months ago i bought a ipod mini and my ppc hasn't seen the light of day since. I didn't buy the ppc for music either it was an added perk, but i found that my mini and my cell phone did everything i need it to so a ppc is just too big and a pain in the butt for just music.
