Thanks for the link to Samsung. It looks like Samsung has it's own agenda.

But in my case I will want to take this hard drive to other places and play mt movies. Who knows what other ventures I will run into there.
Would not it be easier for my just to move my DVD to an AVI format which (I think) most every TV can read?

Thanks

personally i don't trust TV's and their read methods. if anything, try to remain as 'universal' as you can, so you can possibly bring it around when you need it.

for example, i make sure all the content i encode can play on:
- ps3
- iphone
- ipad
- psp (SD content)
- android
- zune? (lol)

anyways, your TV says it can play h.264 High @ 4.1 videos + 2ch AAC-LC in an .mp4 container.

it could just be the way your handbrake settings are. try downloading any of the .mp4 versions from a youtube video (360p, 720p, 1080p), and stick it on your thumbdrive.

Most likely the m4v extension is not recognized as a playable file type by your tv.

Go to Options > Output files, change the MP4 file extension setting to always use MP4.

For the files you've already encoded, change the extension from m4v to mp4.

M0RPH I believe what you say is correct for some reason my TV's do not see my MP4's.
When you say "Go to Options > Output files, change the MP4 file extension setting to always use MP4" do mean on my computer, Handbrake or TV.

That setting is in Handbrake. For some reason HB likes to name output files with the less common M4V extension, unless you change that setting. M4V and MP4 should be interchangeable, but a tv has a list of extensions it will recognize, and Samsung probably did not include M4V in the list. So if you just change the extension I'm sure that will fix your issue.

it's supposed to be interchangeable. i blame apple because by default, they use m4v too

i'm not sure if the m4v container is any different than an mp4 container. not sure if 'renaming' the extension will work. (hope it does!)

Awesome, now I know that .mp4's really do play on your TV.

All you need to make sure is that the container is .mp4 (instead of .m4v).

Don't do .avi. It doesn't officially support h.264 video (and you don't want to do divx/xvid anymore, it's an old video codec).

h.264 video and aac audio in an .mp4 container is as universal as you can get!

Now the BIG question if I am moving my DVD's to MP4 thru Handbrake and I am using Container:MP4 File on the encoder why do they come out .m4v?
I am assuming when you mean container you mean Output Settings

Now under Under Video Video codec I am using H.264 (X.264) is that correct?

If that is then I am still doing something wrong

I found something very interesting. When I put and MPEG4 say from YouTube on a device it plays as an MPEG4 under properties it says MP4 Video (.mp4)

The ones I made from Handbrake say MP4 Video (.m4v) not (.mp4) I think that may be my problem.

How do I make the ones from Handbrake say (.mp4) not (.m4v)

Thanks

Thanks

I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT

My problem was I "assumed"

Under Destination:
File: I would choose the hard drive or thumb drive. When I wrote the name of the movie Handbrake added .m4v.
When I have put things in files or folders in the past a name is a name. But in this case when it says it's a .m4v that what it is.
Now when I write the name of the movie when Handbrake says .m4v I change that to .mp4.
Works like a charm

Thank you all and I am sorry to be such an "assumer"

Sorry, I wasn't clear before. I exported the settings I use for my Samsung TV and uploaded to Mediafire. Try importing those settings into Handbreak and see if it'll work on your TV.

The import function is found under Options at the bottom right corner of Handbreak. The preset is named "Samsung" and should appear at the bottom of the presets window after you import the downloaded file.

I have been reading up on vidcoder. As far as I can tell it's a Handbrake alternative but is a little easier to use.

Thanks
