MPEG-1 Edit Advice, Please!

I captured a nice fat 1.2 gig mpeg1 movie file to make a VCD with. I want to edit out commercials and dice it up to burn on to CDs etc. Has anyone on the forum done this and what product do you use that you find works well? Freeware would be great but I have a b'day coming up. All this is new to me but I have an ATI All-in-Wonder video card and I am playing with it. I am running Win2k. An internet search shows up a place called mediasolutions for an MPEG editor. Is this what I need to get a decent end product? Any advice is appreciated as to the direction to research... good links etc.
