MPEG videos -> DivX.. HOW?

Hi,
I have captured several tv shows on my computer in MPG or MPEG formats. Just wondering what software I need and how do I convert them into DivX format so I can save some space. thanks.

Easiest and best program for the job is VirtualDub. Its freeware and you can find it HERE. I used this to convert the Simpsons that I recorded with my video capture card. I suggest DivX 5.02 for best results.

i installed Virtual Dub and Divx Pro Bundle, but just wondering what setting do I need to change on Virtual Dub to ensure good quality video/audio yet keep the size small. thanks.

I use this Calculator to find the appropriate bitrate. Of course, with DivX5 you will get pretty good quality with around 800kb/s, you probably dont need to go much higher than that if the source was TV. You can try different settings and see what gives you the best size/quality ratio. Under MPEG tools you would want to use GMC and BiDirectional Encoding, but you DO NOT want to use Quarter Pixel.

You will also want to disable the adware that comes with DivX 5, you can do that by following this Guide.
