Mpower (ADSL I think) questions

I live in N.S Canada, and have a friend who just got Mpower hight speed internet service, which I think is an ADSL system, and he has been unable to host any multiplayer games so far. ie. Quake2

1. How does he find his ip and port

2. could this system be using a firewall or proxy? Speaking of that, whats the difference between the two? And if so, how does he get around the problem.

1. go to start, then run: winipcfg

2. Depends on the modem. Some are routers with firewalls, I have just a DSL ethernet bridge. I don't think any DSL provider uses a proxy.
