When ever I open word from a .doc for example, I get an error saying, "The File " " is not available. Then when I hit ok I go to an empty word document (not even white but gray). So then when I close word even when I haven't saved/done anything, I get a message saying, "The file normal.dot already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" I say no and a dialogue pops up for me to save in the templates folder. So I hit cancel and try closing agian but another message pops up saying, "Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?" I hit No and it finnally closes.

This exact same thing happens even when you open word directly and then try to open a word document. I am unable to work on these documents which makes this word useless. I have this computer on a network so when I access the network share and open a word doc with word on the other computer, it works fine... PLEASE HELP!

You can delete or (better) rename normal.dot but understand that any customizations you've made (including autotext, custom dictionary) will be lost. I routinely use a back-up utility to make copies of my NORMAL.DOT as I do a great deal of word processing and can't afford to go through a corruption like this. If you CAN afford to lose your old settings, rename normal.dot something like oldnormal.dot. Close WORD. Re-open word and it will recreate the normal template. You can also try to run DETECT AND REPAIR under Word's HELP menu but I haven't found this to be particularly useful. Another possibility in Windows XP is to restore to a point before the corruption happened. I had to do this just the other day and it was perfect afterwards. It's also possible that one of the docs you were working on was the cause of the corruption and it will happen again once you re-open the document. What version of Windows ARE you using? If 98, delete everything in your C:\Windows\TEMP directory. Be careful...make SURE YOU ARE IN TEMP before deleting anything. If and when you're back up and running smoothly, immediately save the docs in question under a new name by using SAVE AS. Let me know if this helps.
