MSI "K8N Neo2 Platinum" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU

It seems to be a decently priced mobo for 939 sockets. Wondering what experiences people have had with it.

How do I check to see if the mobo has old BIOS? And what does BIOS do that could make the mobo bad? And I plan on getting an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ or 3200+ . . . they are both 90 nm.

An old BIOS will not support any 90nm CPUs. I was unlucky enough to get a K8N Neo2 Pt with an old BIOS and had to RMA it (the motherboard COULD be defective, but an old BIOS seems more likely). How can you tell? Without actual access to the motherboard itself, there's no way of telling. You SHOULD be safe if you order one now.

I just recently bought one and have had next to no problems. I am very happy with it. You just really need to make sure when you first build and install OS to run everything default as it comes, no agressive timings etc.

If you buy a combo from Monarch they update the BIOS for you. And right now their prices are actually cheaper for an A64 3500+ 90nm.

My revision number is 7025 will mine support 90nm???

I have to RMA mine too btw for a failed floppy drive controller. Freaking sucks. Getting MSI international long distance phone call you pay of course on the phone is next to impossible. You either have to call a few hundred times for the cost of a new motherboard or you have to do everything online with them. Don't believe there is an Advanced Replacement RMA option so I will be going back to ASUS since I can at least get them on the phone when I have a problem. Going to sell mine on ebay when I get the RMA back. I wont wait 3 weeks for a new mobo for a failed floppy drive controller. I would rather buy a new motherboard from asus and get things up and running again rather than wait.

I know I am being impatient but nothing pisses me off more than not being able to contact technical support on the phone with a live person especially when I am paying for waiting.

Luthien, there is no revision number "7025" for the K8N Neo2 Platinum. The "7025" that you are referring to is MSI's part number for the K8N Neo2 Platinum.

If you are running BIOS version 1.30 or later (actually, I think v1.20 supports the 90nm A64 939s' but had a Cool N' Quiet' issue) you will be fine with the 90nms. If you have an old board (didn't you get your original K8N Neo2 back in August?) with the original (v1.0) BIOS and you are trying to boot with a 90nm CPU you are screwed - your mobo won't even boot a 90nm CPU without a BIOS update.

Do you have an FX-55 as you stated when you replied to ckbrame in this post? Do you have multiple CPU or WTF?

Anyway, MSI just posted V1.40 (for the K8N Neo2). Here is a link to the MSI Support - BIOS page:

http://www.msicomputer.com/support/bios_result.asp

Good luck.

EDIT: I forgot to say that you can find the BOARD REVISION NUMBER on the board between the 3rd and fourth (3rd and 4th) PCI slots. You can also run CPU-Z and read the revision number ("Rev.") under "Mainboard". properties.

If you don't have CPU-Z, download it here:
