I had a few problems with my X299 motherboard recently where it would kill the CPU when waking from sleep.
It looks like I'm not alone, many of them will kill the CPU when waking from sleep. I came across this thread on the MSI forum and its the same as what happened with my SLI PLUS system:

Just a warning if your thinking of buying MSI and using XMP. As far as I know they haven't fixed this problem yet.
