I love rap but have to agree with a lot of what is being said. What I like about the hip hop artists that I listen to, is that they bring something unique to the table. Whether it's their delivery, lyrical ability, production, style, whatever...I can appreciate the work put into it. That being said, I am extremely disappointed with where hip hop is at this point. There is not a single rap artist pushing the envelope in any way at this point. 95% of the popular rappers on MTV and the radio are horribly untalented embarrassments.

As far as Puffy, he doesn't need to save anything. Aside from owning bad boy, he's got a clothing label, restaurants, and fifty other things that are all making him money. As little respect as I have of him as a musician or entertainer, I gain it back with his work ethic and entreprenurial spirit. The guy is non-stop on GO.

Well put. MTV does not play "rap" videos, they play stuff little teenage kids want to see. If you want to see real rap videos, BET's Tha Bassment and Hits from the Streets are the shows to watch. MTV had that real world Teck guy hosting a show...since when was respected in the rap game? MTV just picked up DJ Clue who was really old 3 years ago... way to go MTV. You can get all the people that teenagers want to see and loose respect from everyone else when they get to their senses.

People who say they hate rap just haven't heard tha much rap. There is more rap out there then you could imagine and I have a feeling that you could find songs/artists that you would like. I have gotten many people I know into rap by playing different songs from different record labels ... just because you don't like the rap on MTV dont bash all of rap.

Shawn Combs (now known as P Diddy) and Percy Miller (known as Master P) are not just rappers, but business men. How many people do you know that create their own enterprises and become America's richest 40 people under 40. Each of these men are approaching net worth of 500 million dollars. Yes, half a billion dollars. You can learn a lot about each of these men if you pick up Forbes Magazine..

AMDTechGeek: You need to learn what you are talking about. P Diddy compensates the people when he samples their music. He isnt stealing anything, he has their permission and hands over a healthy check. And dont worry, you wont be 1/100th of the man P Diddy is today. Did you date Jennifer Lopez?

MTV does not play rap videos. That is like saying because you have used Microsoft Windows you hate all operatiing systems including linux.

Oh, and for all you people who said you hated rap, it just means I will turn up my system even louder in my car so all the white people can hear good music and not that crap rock.:|

I would rather be a Rap Hating nerd than a pimply faced little gangster wannabe punk with my pants around my ass and a shirt 14 sizes too big.

Those of you who keep spouting that MTV is playing what people "want to see" are sorely naive. Realize that what people "want" is what they are taught to want. If the media companies though there would be more money in selling tyedye and watercolor posters, all you homies and your "boys" would become flowerchildren overnight.
Do you stop to think how people like N'Sync and Britney Spears instantly become platinum? Were the children crying out for Britney before they even knew who she was? Why do your little sisters come running home and begging Mommy to buy britney CDs, lunchboxes, posters, tickets, toys, t-shirts, and on and on? Because of their inherent demand for her?

Please.

True enough, the other .99999992 percent are middle school losers who think that acting like the cartoon characters on MTV will make them "cool". That's right, kids. You too can have loose women and pink cadillacs if you throw your life away, drink fowties and smoke pot all day.

Ha, you gotta love those rich (or well off) suburban kids in the mall pretending to be 'gangstas' and acting as if they're bad.... how sadly pathetic.

<-- hates (c)rap, hates malls and hates suburbia.

I remember in 8th grade Tupac died and people were crying and saying "he's not dead" and I didn't knew who he was. I asked around that day and when I found out I said "good riddence" and people were pissed at me.

Ugh I don't feel like getting into another arguement about music with you people....MTV plays rap and r&b because frankly thats what the viewers want. Rock videos are up for votes on TRL, but suprise suprise, they don't get on. MTV does still play rock late at night though...and VH1 plays alot.

MTV stopped playing rock videos around 1992. It seems to me they've stopped videos altogether now.

VH-1 stopped around 1999. Now they just do "count downs" and "David Cassidy Behind the Music".

MTV2 is going in the Rap or "hip-hop" (whatever recycled rap name) direction now. MTV2 should be starting another "reality" show and stop video programming soon.

Remember when MTV was MUSIC television? Now it's just FOX.

I don't watch MTV period. Theres no points of having M in the name, since the music get only played few hours during night. The rest is random "reality" shows and crap like that, it kinda reminds me of a soap operas. But yeah i have like 5 music channels on my digital cable (MTV2 and some VHx channes) so i watch that if i want some decent music.

yup, or you can pretend you're some heavy metal rock punk band called the "yellow dead popsicles" and act all crazy with your shaved ball heads, and smash guitars into a speaker, while yelling (Aerosmith stlye) your lyrics.

yeah, that sounds a lot better than pretending to be a rap star!

No it isn't. Its the beginning of a descent through a downward spiral. America is eating itself alive.

:Q

That's the most racist comment I've heard all week....

So is America drowning in its own decadence, or do these kids at some point grow up and realize that they need to conform to minimum standards of dress and behavior in order to get a decent job?

While the comment may be interpreted as racist, it is essentially true. White people who act like (stereotypical) black people are truly pathetic.

Well, it's not the part about part about "acting black", that's disturbing....it's the part when he calls blacks:

An unfortunate race,
Ignorant,
The worst off in our society,
Fatherless,
Cultureless,
Ambitiousless,
Morally Bankrupt...

You need to take a debate class there guy. Personal attacks just show how weak your argument is. Oh the horror of not being 1/100th the man of "P Diddy" I wonder how I can go on!!!!

Asking if I dated Jennifer Lopez is just asinine. That is like me asking you if you have dated Pamala Anderson since you hate rock.

"MTV does not play rap videos. That is like saying because you have used Microsoft Windows you hate all operatiing systems including linux."

Nice raciest statement there. Oh yea only black people listen to rap.

most rap now, is just overly commercialized garbage. especially anything made by p.diddy and his group, or the master p record company. rappers like nas, 2pac, and possibly even dmx on some tracks, where the songs have some meaning are pretty rare. eminem too, he has like actualy meaning in his song.

personally i listen to a lot of r&b. but blackness does sell. you can get enyce, roccawear and fubu at macy's now. all the fob asian kids wear it, i found it funny, i was sitting in lecture a few weeks ago, and a guy who couldnt even speak english at a 4th grade level was wearing a ruff ryder's tshirt and fubu pants. but yeah really america seems to love fashions that are embraced by black people for one reason or another. occasionally you'll even see a really misguided asian or white guy with corn rows.

BTW mtv2 plays rock videos all the time. the real problem with rock videos, is they arent very exciting even if the music is good. usually its just the band standing there playing their instruments which has no value added to the song , even if it is good. that why groups like blink182 who know how to properly market themselves with a video get airtime on normal MTV. they put a lot of time into their videos so people actually watch them. i'm not trashing rock music , as i like quite a bit of it, but rock bands need to learn a bit from admittedly p.diddy about marketing.
