Well, it hasn't been just our elections they've been mucking with; they've attacked every euro democracy for the most part.Of course there has always been espionage throughout time but these new grass root campaigns have never been as successful as we made them.

I worry about how fast tech in VR, AR and generally is going to effect us going forward. False flag attacks could become very, very viable.

It seems that the russians are just as covertly hostile as the chinese. Back when I was working in the defence industry the chinese were described as the enemy. Russia are the same. Putin seems happy to let trump cozy up to him but it's not going to stop any of the destabilisation operations being undertaken by russian intelligence.

I have an anecdote actually. Microsoft built an advanced support centre for enterprise in china and the company I used to work for refused to use it. So did the aus defence department. Because it was in china and would potentially give them access to our servers and whatnot. When the air conditioning repair guy needs a top secret clearance so he can work in the company's server room unsupervised. Well you aren't letting the chinese in there. Even though the support centre was owned and operated by microsoft there is too much risk.

Also once you go above a certain classification level for data you cannot use chinese made hardware to store it. This goes for things like crypto modules in particular.

A few years ago the aus government put out tenders for companies to supply the equipment for a nation wide fibre optic network.Huawei's bids were denied on national security grounds. In other words we didn't want their equipment installed inside a major piece of communication infrastructure.

The chinese threat is largely covert in nature but at least australia is aware of it.

Well yeah and we do the same, of course to carying degrees. I mean, the russians stole our B29 bomber back in the late 40s early 50s. They are not and never have been our friends. Same with China though they are obviously have arose more in the age of stealing our newer tech, like our stealth tech.

Yep. China are terrible. That's why the australian government and the agencies advising them. Take some fairly harsh actions to mitigate the risks associated with them. Everyone is in on it. When snowden leaked australia got into trouble for having put the president of indonesia under electronic surveillance and then sharing the intelligence with the NSA.

You would think that goes without saying, like huwai for phones and kaspersky for antivirus.. It is not that these companies are bad it is because once a company has a presence in rivaling countries and your product represents an attack vector you can be sure the govt will tap you one way or the other at some time(and maybe you are in the dark).. And it goes both ways, I cant fathom Chinese officials using apple made iphones.
Its like protection online, you gotta know what level of protection you need, for avoiding google tracking incognito mode, to avoid riaa etc use a vpn, to buy illegal stuff online tor+vpn+bitcoins, to do really nasty stuff tor+maybe vpn+btc and some random open or hacked wifi in a somewhat public place with burner hardware. The last couple of options either means you are living in a hardcore totalitarian regime that doesnt like you hair color or you need to evaluate life choices asap.

That must be difficult. I'm sorry.

I've been pleasantly surprised that my life long Republican father has changed his views almost entirely. Life conspired to show him that a lot of his beliefs were anchored in fear, insecurity, lack of life experience, being uninformed. Lo and behold, the more he educated himself and opened up as well as faced difficult things he became a decent human being... No longer hating other races, no more hating gays, no more thinking Medicine for profit is a good thing, no more thinking education or prison for profit is a good thing, no more thinking his guns were an important part of his persona, no more hating religious freedom. In fact, little to no judgement whatsoever. He won't even judge my nearly 30 year old nephew who has never worked a day in his life or budged from his computer desk since the day he graduated high school. I judge him!
My parents will never change and feel like they are always right on all matters. My father scoffs at educated people but couldn't pass a college entrance exam. He gets mad when I try to explain things to him. My mom has a business degree but still falls into Republican comfort zone believing what Faux and the alt-right nutjob factories tell her.

She got mad at me recently when I built her new computer and set her home pages to CNN and MSNBC rather than Faux to begin exposure therapy to truth. She'd rather read Faux, WND and even Infowars than any mainstream source. Both of them hate and I emphasize the word hate because they literally do hate Democrats and call them liberals at every opportunity. They also know that all of the kids are college educated and are Democrats. Funny how none of their kids subscribe to this thinking. Nevertheless, they are my parents and I still love them and try to help them.

They also require companies operating in China to partner with one of their businesses in order to do business there which gives them access to their IP.

LOL! Love the prank you pulled on your mom! I'd do the same thing but my mother was and my father has become and my in-laws are sane people.

Of course you love your parents! Loving people is a trial at times no matter who the people are.

Wow, great read and please never change anandtech bkuewave crew.

I have to ask. Why would you change their homepage to CNN with all the project mockingbird bullcrap instead of something credible like the BBC? I've watched CNN recently and it was LOL bad, with the news anchors doing a fake African country hand gesture. As chance would have it earlier that day my barber had Fox on and it bad but not LOL bad. It was my first time seeing that channel in a very long time.

The US has meddled in 80+ elections since the late 40s not including coups. Of course Russia did it. Of course we should shut it down to the best of our abilities. It's odd to see pictures of people like Michael Moore at rallies that Russia organized. Now that collusion seems not part of the deal for Trumps people it's time to find who did collude.

Reminds me of Trump talking about how America has had people killed, too.

Link to documents showing no collusion by Trump or his people, the latest indictments were but a small part of the overall investigation. If you think it’s over than you probably watch more Fox/ right wing sources than you’re admitting..

The Russians didn't dupe Michael Moore into making Trump President. It worked just fine on a lot of other people, however.

"See! They're just as dumb!" is no kind of defense of that.
