ok, my cousin just ordered his pc parts off of newegg, but in order to keep it below $350 dollars, he omitted the graphics card, so he's going to use a geforce 440mx to hold him over for awhile, my question is this, can he OC the card to the point where it's beneficial, and if so, what should the core/memory be at, about.

His rig is as follows

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (Barton), Gigabyte VIA KT600 mobo, 512 mb Crucial pc2700

Oh yea, and if this IS possible, he was considering buying a BFG gpu fan to replace the heatsink so he could OC it as far as it would go.

lol yea, but keep in mind, he doesnt really care if he totals it like awhile from now, but this has to last him at least 4 months, SO what would be a good OC for it?

edit: OK, so if the 440's memory clock is 400 MHz, and the core is 270, would an increase to 450/290 be a safe oc?

As long as he has decent airflow in his case, he should be able to get a mild overclock on his 440. IMO, the card is not worth spending money on an aftermarket HSF in order to get a higher overclock.

No one can really say whether or not your cousin's card will overclock well or not. Each card is different. With some, you can get crazy overclocks and others may only let you overclock by 5-10mhz over stock, if that.

I would just say to start slow, overclocking first the core by 5mhz increments until you get a hard-lock (during testing) or you start getting graphical errors, and then back down by 5-10mhz. Then do the same for the memory until you start getting artifacts (random white dots that sometimes look like snow, or random glitches like polygonal shapes appearing where they are not supposed to be), then back it down a little.

Of course, if your cousin feels the need for a HSF, it's his money to spend.

My $0.02.

I suggest he saves up for another month, then sells the MX440 and buys a decent gaming card. That gF4MX is going to neuter the rest of his system to no small extent.

see this card at officemax for $30 after rebate. Tempted to get this card, but didn't. I just bought a setup include: ABIT NF7-S, AMD 2500+, and Kingston 512mb pc3200. What is a good card to compliment this system that is < $100?

Well if he isn't running the most demanding games at the highest resolutions, the GF4MX440 is still fine, especially if you overclock it a bit. I was able to overclock mine by quite a bit(at least, compared to my 9700 Pro) and while its still not blazing fast by any means, its a bit better

This thing will still play the UT2K3 demo, so its still good, at least, good enough to tide you over a few months.

My MX-440 is running at 330/500 - had to put a fan on it though...the passive cooling isn't enough for running at stock speeds! My card actually warped from the temperature.

BTW, 500 is the highest that you should be able to go on the RAM (that's if your card has HYNIX RAM, whereas the earlier Samsung RAM went to about 520).

Being as most 3rd party cooling would be as much as the card is worth I say get a new card.

lol, that's so true Por. OC the 440... seems rather pointless as even @ a crazy OC, it'll still suck and blow the same time.

I hear ya , he just thinks that his mx420 is "fine" I don't think he knows the difference though, all he would have to do is use his bro's 9500 pro for a day or 2, and then he'd be racing to buy a good card
But I think he will get a 9800 pro, it's just a matter of time.
