mx518 vs. G5

I need to get a new mouse and the mx518 and the G5 have caught my eye.
On the one hand a high precision laser mouse is probaly real cool and all and the tilt wheel sounds kinda awesome but I really want that second side button and after all how much better can the laser be than the mx518's MX-optical engine.
also I've heard complaints about the tilt wheel breaking after a few months, and that the laser doesn't work on some surfaces.
Your opinion matters!!! Let's hear it!!!

i have 2 g5s in my house, one for me, one for my brother and they are absolutely great. it feels literally like a surgeon's scapel - great for normal use and gaming. the changeable weights are great too, and so is the on the fly dpi changing. i don't miss the side buttons to much, and the mouse itself is rock solid even after 6 months of heavy usage. wouldn't settle for anything less.

I had a G5, but I couldn't stand it so I returned it and bought a second 510.

mx510, the 510 and the 518 are basically the same mouse, there is really no need for the 518's dpi switching or whatever it is

I would say mx518, but if you have money to burn, get the G5. the 518's dpi switching is fairly useful if you're a high-twitch FPS gamer like me, and the side buttons are good grenade buttons or buttons for whatever you want bound to them, but the G5 is overall a better-feeling mouse with the switchable weights. BTW, laser doesn't work on all surfaces, but optical doesn't either.

Agreed on the 510(if you can still find one for cheap) if you are going for the best bang for your buck. If you have actually tried the dpi switching and have to have it then look towards the 518 or G5. The G5 I tried for 3 weeks (and took back) was slightly more responsive than the 518 I also have but I honestly don't think made a darn bit of difference on my gaming. Also the left mouse button started mechanically sticking and the surface started wearing off. Having owned/tried them all my opinion is that Logitech's mouse quality has increasingly declined with each successive model after the MX500.

I love my G5 (just picked it up, I've been using one and a Razer Copperhead [equally nice, but, eh, doesn't do it for me] for a few weeks now with my friends PCs, to get the feel of what I wanted).

But then again, I'm not too big on the need for all the side buttons. Good scroll wheel, responsive mouse, and no need for batteries every 4 weeks (tis why I switched mice), all I need in a good mouse. And this seriously meets and kicks the crap out of all those requirements.

I am trying to decide between these myself. I like the surface feel of the G5 better, but I will probably end up getting the MX518 since I want the extra buttons. I can't understand why they dropped those on the G5. The G5 at least has the tilt wheel though, which I guess could be used to make up the functionality of the two missing buttons. I would have also considered the MX610 as it has a ton of buttons, but I hate wireless mice and I'm not sure how good its sensitivity is.

I've found that the extra buttons aren't that useful for multiplayer games, but are invaluable in many singleplayer games I play.

I upgraded to a G7(pretty much the same as a G5) from a MX518 a while back and I assigned the L and R tilt buttons on the scroll wheel to game action keys. I use these L/R tilt buttons as the replacements for the missing side and application button on the MX518.

I upgraded from a MX510 to a G5, and I love it. The increased sensor sensitivity REALLY pays off... once you get used to the sensor action and adjustable weight of the G5, you will never go back. Only gripes I have about the G5 is that it's missing a thumb button on the side of the mouse, and the Mouse3 button (when you depress the scroll wheel) has 2 "clicks" to it.... and you need to depress it pretty hard to activate the button. But when you depress it hard enough to trigger the Mouse3 button, you might accidentally scroll the mouse wheel a notch or two. It can be addressed by remapping keys. A slight nuisance, but definitely worth dealing with to get the ultra smooth laser sensor action.

Next up for me: Deck Legend keyboard!

I'm not angry. I'm FURIOUS! The G7 would be my dream mouse if it had two thumb buttons.

I have a g5 and I dont like it. It just doesnt track right compared to most other mice i've used. I actually went back to using my mx310.

I returned a G5 for an MX518. The middle-button-wheel-click was too hard to use on the G5, and missing thumb button was annoying. The only thing the G5 has over the 518 is 400 dpi and horizontal scrolling, which I quickly realized I would never use. Tracking was also a problem on some surfaces with the G5, but it worked ok on others.

I love the crap out of my G5. Everything from the feel to the feet is amazing, I have played around with the 518 and I can't see why so many people like it better. I will admit I never use any of the side buttons, but I have found the DPI switch to come in handy many times.

On the G5/G7, you can bind the right/left tilt scroll wheel buttons to game functions. Unless you reassign the application button on the MX518, the G5/G7 actually gives you two buttons in place of the second thumb button.
