Hi, i recently built the rig below, but when playing farcry/halo on high settings and 1024x768, i get Horrible fps during intense battle or detailed background (were talking 16-22 fps in farcry, even lower in halo). I have the 4.7 catalyst driver, i tried the omega driver (no difference) and the 4.8 driver beta wont install. I exchanged my 9800pro today for another, and yet the problem remains. I have no idea why my games play so poorly... i have yet to update my bios (as i have little knowledge in the subject), but other than that, i have sp1, mobo drivers, ect...... My ram is slightly overclocked, so would loosening the timings help? Other than overclocking my card, is there anyway to increase its performace? I dont understand, it seems like my system should run better...

Rig:
AMD athlon 64 3000+, MSI k8t FSR, 1GB pc3200 OCZ "valueram" @ 2.5-3-3-8 (2.70), Thermaltake case
(6+ fans), 9800 pro 128mb 256bit, thermaltake 420watt.

Thanks for your time.

it should run it better, try previous versions of the catalyst drivers and omega drivers. Sounds like a vid card problem for sure.

I just tried the 4.6, and i got a few extra fps (1-3) but nothing big. I dont have any programs running in the background, im using a fresh install of XP, and only have about 15 processes running in tskmanager, although 4 of those happen to be svchost.exe.... Did i do a bad job builiding my computer? Could my processor temperature have anything to do with this? It idles at 45c and runs at 55c at full load.. too hot? Does it scew up video card stuff? My card is not directly connected to the harddrive as it states in the manaul... is that a big deal?

temps are fine. as for your problem, motherboard drivers would be my first guess.

Ya, ive looked, but i cant find any other drivers than those that came with my mobo. The MSI site has my mobo set as not being a k8t800 chipset, which is crap, so the msi site is screwy as far as drivers go. Know any other places where i can find these drivers? Thanks.

AA and AF are turned as low as possible. Also, i just tried farcry at 1280x1024 at all very high/high, and when i looked anywhere other than straight down or up, my fps would drop to 1, and pretty much freeze... wierd!

Run dxdiag from start->run and see if "agp texture acceleration" is enabled.
If not reinstall drivers with that order

1.Mobo drivers
2.DX
3.gpu

"as low as possable" isn't off, select the aplcation preference checkboxes and that will keep them off as long as you don't have them enabled in far cry.

also, www.viaarena.com is the place to go for via chipset drivers.

Under dxdiag, my system says that "AGP texture acceleration: not availible" which means i need to install the above drivers, however, i am unaware of what "DX" and "gpu" drivers are...but i think DX means directx and gpu means catalyst 4.7?

Exactly. You haven't correctly installed mobo drivers so do what I told you in that order. That's what's keeping your fps so low.

Yes. Your motherboard chipset drivers are screwed up, and it REALLY lowers your performance. This happened to me when I installed my 9800Pro (lousy NVIDIA driver leftovers... )

Ok, so ive installed those in order, and now my AGP texture accerleration is "enabled". My farcry FPS have jumped to about 27-40 outside during heavy combat with all settings at very high (1280x1024) and texture detail at medium. Is that about where they should be, because it looks much better already! Thanks for all the help!
