for 2 years, i was a Software engineering major at RIT.

Then, i decided I needed a more "normal" social atmosphere (aka the existance of girls) and so i transferred this year to Penn state main campus. Now im here, and the girl situation is excellent, but I feel my education lacking.

Am I dumb for sacrificing education for social happiness? Is there that much of a education gap between RIT and PSU? I feel RIT had much more of a hands on learning experience, whereas PSU is much more test oriented. Is tehre a large difference in the eyes of an employer between PSU and RIT? Does anyone actually hire people in the computer field and have first hand experience here?

I gave up getting layed in HS to have the highest GPA of any male in my graduating class.

Result: Made $1000 (after reselling books bought with financial aid) for spending 2 years at a community college and getting a 2 year degree. The hours were able to transfer to a university and I got paid for getting a 2-year degree.

I gave up getting layed in community college to get free tuition at a university.

Result: In progress, check back in a year.

I currently have but one friend and I spend my days in my dorm's study room.

pick your poison.

Sometimes you have to make sacrafices in life to reach your ultimate goal. If your goal in life is to have fun and get laid, you made the right choice. If you want to have a fulfilling career and lots of employment opportunities, you may have made a step backwards for a short term benefit.

You can always meet girs AFTER college; getting the best training possible in your field is a life-time investment.

You have the freedom to f**k up and be irresponsible.
It all comes down to this: what will you have after you leave school?
Reality i$ a bitch (unless you plan to live with your parents the rest of your life, in which case most people would consider you a pathetic loser).

Most of the ppl you are in high school and collge with now are distant memories when you get to be middle age.

If you can have fun and still be financially secure, then great... if not... well, middle age sucks when there is not enough money or financial security and the ppl you sacrificed it to have fun with couldn't give a crap about you anymore.

There were more females in the SE program than CS.

Dude that doesn't sound like such a life.

BUT if your happy studying like that go for it

You can still get the career you want. You are still doing the same degree right? If your good you will get a decent degree and get the right jobs later on. It doesn't matter that much where you finished your degree. It isn't as if your dropping out of Uni to go have fun and get laid. Your still studying and you will still get that degree.

Most people do not have the discipline to have a social life *and* do serious study and make it to class.
It's usually one extreme or the other.

Good luck when you're looking for a job... networking is an important part of the whole college thing.

I'd say its best to try to keep them balanced. The way I look at it (I'm a Utilitarian), is that happiness is what matters in life. However, the study hard vs have fun in college debate is one of being happy in the short term, and being happy in the long term. Now ideally in life you could be really happy in college, getting laid, still get a great job, and be rich and get laid even more when your in middle age and life is good. In reality you would be one lucky @%@# to get this life. So, you have to try to balance the fun you are having in school with the ability to be financial secure when you are older. However, let me say this, having fun at college is REALLY EASY, the girls will never be hotter, and there are thousands of them, so finding a few loose ones shouldn't be a problem, alcohol, parties, girls are EVERYWHERE. When you are older it isn't quite to easy to get these things on a regular basis since you will have a family and there would be much larger consequences to going out and getting sh|t faced drunk and waking up in some random girls bed (in college this is pretty much par for the course). So, I'd say, have as much fun as humanely possible now while you can, up till the point that it will impact your future enough to make your standard of living lower then you want to live with when you are older. If you are OK with making 40k when you are 50, then try to do just what it takes to get there, if you want 100k at that age to be happy then obviously you will have to work harder now.

I still don't get why you can't do both? You can do well in both of them.

It isn't that hard to study and have a lot of fun. Just commit to both.

I wish I followed this in school, but the social life doesn't get you anywhere. Good grades get you everywhere. Focus on school, socalize later. It'll pay off.

I've gone to RIT for 4 years as an EE major, but was dianogsed with cancer this year and had to stop. Looking back, it was a good experience, but I feel I had to sacrifice to much of my social life for grades. I was also in AF ROTC so that took up a lot of my free time, but my illness got me disqualified.

There is more to learn at college then academics, while it is not good to sacrifice all of one, make sure you have fun. To many kids at RIT do only one or the other. I personally did not really enjoy my classes at RIT, so I am transferring to SUNY Geneseo in January and pursueing a degree in Psychology and a masters in Social Work.

I've decided I'd rather spend my life helping people then being an engineer. My fiance was diagnosed with leukemia and just finished treatment about 3 weeks before I was diagnosed.

I just finished and we are both looking forward to starting over

time managment and balance in your life FTW?

it's not that hard... don't study to the point where schoolwork is the only thing in your life and don't party so hard that your schoolwork starts to suffer.

learn to use your time effectively and you'll have plenty of time to both do what you need to do and have a decent social life.
