My computer freezes watching videos

My computer is about 7 years, all apparently works well, except when I try to watch streaming video, or from the hard disk.
I used a second hard drive to install a clean windows and same problem.
I also tried to remove a RAM module and use them separately.

That's a pretty old video card. I would see if you can borrow a newer one from someone. It doesn't have to be a powerful gaming card, but just a newer (5000-series and newer), or an NVidia (GT430, or GT610/620/630 or GT730).

If you install OCCT 4.x, and run the video card stress test, does it freeze up?

What kind of videos are they? Later versions of Flash are really requiring decent hardware. Other videos may be wanting a better codec, but I couldn't tell you for sure without knowing the type of video and the player softer you have now.

I can not get another graphics card borrowed. OCCT GPU Test was running for 30 minutes without problems, with some games also seems that freezes.

With any format video, I use K-lite with MPC.

Let's pretend its not hardware related for a moment and lets cut out the fluff, bells and whistles to make your pc at optimum performance first.

This way you can then forget the idea that the problems is software/windows issues.

First stop is delete all your trash located in:
C : \temp
C : \windows\temp
C : \Documents and settings\username\AppData\Local\Temp

After that defrag your pc fully 100% it may take a while.
Next remove your wallpaper as a 4-15 meg image can baloon up past 90 megs of memory usage even past 200 megs taking up vast amounts of memory.

Next click on start control panel administrative tools services, scroll down to THEMES and disable themes.

Next depending on your pc you will want to reboot and during boot time you should be given the option to diagnose your hard drive either during the boot process or when entering the BIOS options.

This will scan your hard drive and will read out the SMART data that will tell you the estimated time your hard drives life will end and will show any relevant issues the drive might have. If it does prompt that the drive is failing then this could be another reason why you might have issues.

If the SMART diag says hardware tests have passed then your hard drive is just fine then we can go on from there to diagnose your other hardware like video card or your PSU.

Many tech either like to use the latest video drivers or the video drive that came along with that video card on CD. Reason being is some new drivers will overdrive the hardware making work harder than it should thus the reason for using the original old video driver for that particular video card.

So assuming you did all the above then the next step is to run chkdsk c : /f at the command prompt and will fix most errors in windows and free space marked as used.

Next thing to check is now the security of your pc because some stupid malware virus writers will make such poor viruses to make it appear the virus is a simple windows error or hardware error by screwing around with and slowing down certain services. While scanning for viruses it would be best to disable WINDOWS PROTECTION.

Technically Windows will try and back itself up in case a driver gets corrupt and will auto replace it with the last known good driver but when a pc is infected and you do not know it and when you clean a virus off it can use the WINDOWS PROTECTION to save itself to reinfect your pc again after you are done scanning it so disable WINDOWS PROTECTION while scanning and delete past restore points. After you do this then start a new scan.

Once the new scan is done and either found something or nothing then you can re-enable protection and create a new restore point at least now with confidence your restore point is clean as well.

Once all the above is done now you can optimize the video settings. Since it is an older video card then I would not use MAX video resolution because that would just slow it down. The old standard desktop resolution was 1064x768 Keep it like that for a while until we get things under control as we diagnose things. Also in your games make the in game resolution the same as 1064x768. Yeah I know it will cramp your style but this is just for diagnosing your issues.

Ok once you have done the above and played with games and watched videos now report back here on your findings.

If the issues still happen then I suspect the 3rd party video drivers being at fault and not your pc or windows is at fault. Those XVID and DIVX drivers can really mess a pc up sometimes.

It is not always good to use a so called super duper program that boasts to be able to play all video formats. That is why instead I just use VLAN as it does that without the need to download all those junk video drivers.

We can go more hard core and use a registry cleaner.
The school of thought from Microsoft regarding the system registry is this:

If a registry setting is pointing to a blank area no longer existing then that is an error and can slow a pc down.

My old fav is to use system mechanic to clean the registry of programs no longer used and was uninstalled days, months, years ago.

Today Ccleaner has gone through so many revisions that its comparable to System mechanic and its a free to try software for home use and also cleans the registry.

After using either software package reboot the pc and you just might find your system way much faster/healthier(stable) than before.

Because your OS is XP and is no longer supported by Microsoft you can still use Windows update to get the latest updates up to the point when they stopped supporting XP.

I have an old hard drive and install windows 7 and give me same problems using WMP, I think that discard problems of windows or could infect a hard disk to another.

I still think that the problem is related to the video card or its drivers. Since that's an older card, they are no longer updating the drivers (?). Last time I used my HD4850, the legacy drives still had some bugs in them.

I would try a newer video card, with newer drivers.

Then do the BIOS check as I mentioned in the previous post to confirm if your hard drive is good or not. Not testing would mean not knowing then throwing any new driver or new video card would be worthless and time wasting.

BIOS check i do not know what you mean exactly or my BIOS not have that tool. Anyway my hdd pass a test with HDDRegenerator without problems.

The driver of the link are older, than I have, and my video card is pci, I do not know if will serve the same drivers, between pci and agp.

As new data my computer froze in my desktop in couple of times and i've noticed that when a video ends in .flv format, some green square appears randomly.

Try this:

My easiest suggestion for you to try is to disable Flash hardware acceleration. In my opinion, this can cause very high CPU usage when watching flash videos.

To disable it, open a Youtube video and pause it. Then right-click inside the Flash video and choose "Settings". In the dialog box that opens, click the Monitor icon to see the Display settings. Last, uncheck the "Enable hardware acceleration" setting and click close. Exit Firefox and open it again to test if the problem has gone away.

If that doesn't help, you can try disabling Firefox's hardware acceleration:

Go to Firefox button > Options > Advanced > General

Then uncheck the "Use hardware acceleration when available" setting. Close Firefox for the change to take effect then open it again to see if the problem is gone.

Disable hardware acceleration dont work, from firefox and desktop. When I try see a video on the hard disk before starting appear a error message
"Error creating dx9 alllocation presenter, Create Device failed, Error Code: 0x8876086a, D3Derr_notavailable".

Another question, it is normal for the fan of the graphics card, stop, or should run continuously.

All of your symptoms point to the video card. Have you felt the video card to see how hot the heatsink gets? Tried spinning the fan on it to make sure it isn't seized up?

Use VLC does not work, DX 10 It is not compatible with xp.
The fan work but stop sometimes.

If is problem hardware graphic card, should appear on the monitor stains or not, can run games smoothly for 1 hour without problems, but video it is impossible 1-5 minutes with luck.

No, a fan on a graphics card should never come to a complete stop while running. If it isn't dust, it's probably time to replace the card, or just get a replacement computer.

I buy a new graphics card and not fix the problem. I have no idea what happens
Hmm. What brand and video card, did you un-install your old drivers before removing the old card, and what drivers did you install for the new card?

Does the new card's fan stop too? If it does, then something strange is going on.

My graphics card is passive, I buy a cheap ati 5450. I put the new graphics card first, uninstall drivers with ddu, and install new driver dvd.

Hmm. I would try testing it out in Linux, to isolate software / hardware problems.

Download an ISO for Linux Mint (I like the MATE desktop edition, it's a lot like Windows) at www.linuxmint.com . Burn it to a DVD. Then boot off of it. It's a "Live" disc, you can run it on your system, without installing it onto your HDD as a permanent OS.

Try watching some videos in Linux, if you can, and see if you have the same problems. If you do, then something else is wrong with your hardware (power / temp / board problems). If you don't, then you may just need to do a fresh install of Windows.
