No, I'm not talking show tunes. Whenever I turn on my computer the case hums pretty loudly. I took it apart once and I cleaned it out. I didn't have a can of compressed air so I did the best I could. I can use someone's can now, but will that help the problem? It's pretty stinkin' annoying.

Hello hzl_eyed_grl....don't see you in GH often...

Has it always been humming?

Usually the humming can come from a few things...the main culprits being fans....you might want to check each one....in my case it's the power supply fan doing all the singing.

You might also want to check that your hard drives and CDROMs are firmly mounted.....loosely mounted drives can shake around a bit and cause the entire case to vibrate.

You could also try using the vacuum cleaner to remove as much dust as possible in fan/heatsinks.

I have the same problem with my rig but I got 10-80 MM Sunon fans and also a vantec CPU cooler which runs at 7000 RPM.

A couple of years ago I started hearing this amazing moaning and groaning that seem to come from the next door apartment. (My computer center was against the wall.) It was so loud that I was going to congratulate my neighbor on the improvement of his technique to get his wife to make that much noise. And maybe even ask him for pointers if not photos or videos....

Anyway it turned out to be the powersupply fan. The fan was clogged with dust and grit and probably would have failed and if I hadn't checked it.

thats not bad, my case sounds like a F-15 going full military thrust but i guess thats what i get for having over 13 fans, 3 of them being 120mm

actually my old case did vibrate pretty bad, but my new one(addtronics full tower) is like 50lbs so it doesnt vibrate, plus i loaded it down with hardware(2 HD's 2 CD drives etc.) so its pretty resisant to vibrating, it actually circulates the air in my computer room pretty good And it keeps it hot in here too, if i turn my comp off i can notice the temp drop in here its kinda scary that my comp can effect the room temp that much. And it is loud, i just moved out and now its in a differnt room, but it used to be in my bedroom, it took me a few days after i moved out to learn to get to sleep without the sound of my comp buzzing in the background.

What vibrated in my case, before I took it out, was an exaust fan at the back taking up one fo the PCI slots. It was fine to begin with then as time went on it developed singing capabilities... it got to a point which was so unbearable that I just took it out and got another one instead.

My case hums too... I can't narrow down the culprit. I know it's not the CPU or Power Supply fan. The weird thing is if I take the cover off the case there's no hum, but if I put the cover back on the hums there. It seems to be coming from the general area where the Hard Drives are, and I never got this hum until after I added the fourth Hard Drive. Is it possible that the Hard Drives could be creating some sorta strange frequency that's resonating when the case covers on? Any clues would be nice because like hzl_eyed_grl says it's annoying as hell, especially when I leave my computer on all the time.

You mean, "What's a giggling grinch like you doing in a place like this?" Heehee

Thank you all for your help. I've been sick so I'm currently at my mom's house. When I get home, I will try to open it up again and really look at it. I still know next to nothing about the inside of that mysterious box so I have a really stupid question. Is it possible to have it open and running at the same time to see what's making the noise? Then...geez...I'll have to look in my manual to see what the friggin' part is. Oh well, I want to learn anyway. Someday I would like to build my own system. :Q lol

So, I just take the outer casing off and use a vacuum or a compressed air can to blow/suck out all the dust and dirt?

You mean this is an OEM computer making a lot of noise? That's odd, usually they're silent.

they're silent, until a fan goes...

u can have the case off and the computer on...and i doubt dust is causing the hum...

wash it with soap and water.

LOL OEM? I'm not sure what it stands for but I know what you are talking about. I bought my system at Circuit City, so no I didn't build this one.

nortexoid, I will try that when I get home to my computer.

Thank you everyone. I know that my knowledge of what is inside it is VERY limited, but I really appreciate the help. It's just sooo annoying to hear that thing humming for as long as I have it on. I turn it off every time I log off just so I don't have to hear it. lol
