My computer is just SLOW

Ok, this is my setup.

Asus p4s8x mobo
pentium 4 2.53ghz 400 MhZ fsb
2x512 = 1 gig pc2700 ddr corsair ram ( i think it's corsair)
Radeon 9700 pro 128meg
western digital 7200 rpm 8 meg cache hd 120 gig
ibm desktar 30 gig 7200 rpm 2 meg cache
Dell 2001 fp
logitech mx 500 mouse


OK about 2 weeks ago I got this wonderful dell 2001 fp display. It's beautiful looking and I love it. Ever since then I've been noticing this crappy mouse lag. I hope it's not the display, and i'm lead to believe it's not and here is why. My games have been running crappy too. I can't give FPS, i suppose i should fraps that out. I've been playing farcry on this setup and I never turn on AA or anything special, i just want it to run at 1024 and it has been running FINE at that. Now when i play it's just laggy and the mouse doesn't feel super responsive. It feels more like hard drive lag too, which is weird, cause i just got this WD hd from bestbuy on a good rebate. 49$ AR for it...which was cool, but it shoudln't be slow.

I dont know what to do, i JUST did a clean windows install. It's on the 2nd partition of the slave drive, being loaded from GRUB with the 30 gig drive as master, could that be a problem? I dont knw, i'm just feeling like it's running crappy.

and it's running service pack 1...

any advice would be smashing. thanks!

shouldn't this setup run farcry decently?!?!

i'm runnning hte latest ati drivers with the stupid CCC, maybe that's a problem.

Is the computer firewalled and running up-to-date antivirus software? Have you tried an antivirus/antispyware scan? Is it patched (other than its lack of Service Pack 2)?

Also, the FSB on your 2.53GHz CPU should be 533MHz. If you have any PCI cards, please mention what they are, too.

It's all patched, excluding the sp2, i have to keep symantec AV for school and that appears clean, i will check for spyware, but no popups,

yes it's 533 that's my mistake, and i have no pci cards...thanks for the reply!

i think i'm gonna start swapping things around, display, mouse, vid card? until i find the culprit.
