Try Hitachi/IBM's Drive Fitness Test diagnostics from this page and see if that sheds any light on it.

Check the power & ide cables to the hard drive make sure they're plugged in tight & getting a good connection.

If that doesn't work, then transplant your IBM into the working computer (assuming it isn't a laptop) and try to detect and test it there. If that doesn't work either, then it sounds like it's kicked the bucket.

Nope, it isn't a laptop, I'll try that right now
I think maybe it could be the IDE drivers??? The Nvidia one's i have the 6.39 standalone drivers and Windows XP SP2

No, drivers will not make a difference in detecting the drives during POST. Only while the OS is running.

If it was working before and then you had problems - then the harddrive is dead
If it wasn't working before and you can't get it started then double check your drive jumpers.

If it is a brand new drive, it either was DOA, malfactured, or in handling the drive you dropped/bumped/banged/got water in/ and otherwise messed it up. HD's are fairly sensitive to this type of thing.

Of course, the drive could have been shorted out or your PSU could have potentially killed the drive from faulty power control (way outside voltage spec)

Check your hardware monitor from the BIOS and make sure your voltages are within 5% spec

ex: 12v should be within 11.4v to 12.6v

Totaly agree, if its the drive it will fail in the other machine, if not its down to your bios settings or worst possible case IDE controller (as the drive was working before).

I'm assuming that you ment you left the machine on in windows and came back to a black screen with the message on?

^^ Thats exactly what I ment
I tried my harddrive on my old computer, and my old computer didnt reconize it either, So does that mean the harddrive is dead??

I don't think that would be very easy. Give him the benefit of the doubt this time around. To nuke a hard drive beyond being recognized by an IDE controller, I think you'd have to attack the drive's firmware, which is typically updated in a pure DOS command-line environment.

At any rate, what you described is what I typically see at work when a Win2000 system's IDE drive kicks the bucket. Maybe just bad luck

Sorry about your drive mate, if its less than 3years old you may find it still have a manufatures waranty.

As for the hacker, let it fly, I highly doubt he did it but maybe it will put him off doing it again
