I went biking from Westwood to Venice yesterday to go take pics of the eclipse, and aside it from being an 18-mile round trip it was my first time doing ANY exercise for months. Add to that my bike is more of a city commuter than a roadbike.
My wrists hurt, my crotch is sore, and I can barely move my legs and back. Ugh. Advil, please.

There's something wrong with my crotch, too, and it hurts like a fcker. I can't post about, 'cause it'll probably get locked, but damn does it suck.

Do you have a good pair of cycling shorts? That will help quite a bit. Voler makes very nice shorts for the money.

That said: it will take a week or so of riding to toughen up your butt. Even though I've ridden on and off for 10 years, I'll still have a sore butt the first few rides after a long break from riding.

Nice job doing 18 miles right out of the gate BTW!!

Thanks! So 18 miles is pretty good for an out of shape fatty like me?
We went down this road which I could have SWORN was flat but ended up having a 2-4% grade over a few miles. Man, did that suck.

Hell yeah dude! Most people gasp in amazement when I tell them I ride 8 miles each way to work every day. After a few weeks of riding you can start bumping your weekly total up by 10% every week or so if you wish (rapid increase in mileage risks overuse injuries to knees/hips). Get in 3-5 days of riding per week for a couple months and I guarantee you'll have made big progress in your level of fitness.

You'd hate riding around Atlanta....no hills much over a mile long, but they're 8% grade or more for the most part. :disgust:

And check out those Voler shorts if you don't already have some. They are really nice shorts for the money...I wore a pair for the Seattle to Portland ride last summer (200 miles in one day...ouch) and was very comfortable.

Yeah, what Skoorb said.... You need to have your butt pounded more often to get used to riding. o:

I think you mean to say "There will be NO FURTHER pounding of my butt. That was just a phase...I was experimenting."

ahh.. the sore phase of exercising... if you consistenly exercise you may see past this stage. most people don't and they continue to get the aches and pains every time they move.. then they automatically associate exercise with pain and never want to do it... and they remain lazy blobs...

Hehe, but most suck!
No doubt. I see people here at work who stop to rest while walking up the ramp from Building 16 to Building 1. The ramp is like 250 feet long at about a 3% grade.

Ironically, they are usually carrying a burger & fries with them since the cafeteria is in Bldg 16.

The saddle SuperTool pointed out is one of the "anatomic" saddles than many people like (some of them are way worse than a regular saddle). You'll likely have to try a few different ones until you're happy with one. I tried a bunch until I found a Selle Italia Turbomatic (a racing saddle with a bit more cush than most) and won't ride anything else now.

Bahahah I feel better about myself now I was chugging along about 1/8 mile behind my friend (who was barely breaking a sweat...spending most of his time riding HANDS FREE dammit)..

I have the stock split seat w/ shock that came with my bike (Specialized Sirrus Comp).. it's pretty hard in comparison to the Specialized saddle the SuperTool linked to (I had it on my old MTB). I'll check some out at Supergo later today when I go get shoes.

A hard saddle is better for long rides and should have a narrower profile. Cyling shorts will help as well, preferably bibs(over the shoulder type) I've used many different brands over the years, but I like Voler the best. Raced bmx, road bikes, and mountain bikes for most of my life.
