This is my first ever attempt at building a PC, so be nice

Requirements

- Internet
- Word processing
- DSLR photo editing in Photoshop
- Dreamweaver
- Creating graphic in Photoshop
- Needs 5.1 support to supply my Logitech Z5500s with crisp sound
- Games (FPS eg. COD4/WOW, strategy eg. C&C Tiberium Wars, and racing games for my G25 eg. Grid, GTR2 etc)
- Digitalising tapes with my Hauppage card...this has hardware encoding
- Obviously loads of misc stuff but this is all I could think of

- I want it to last 5 years - not fussed if I can't play the latest games in 5 years

Proposed Spec

CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 (clock to 3.0Ghz)

CPU Cooler - Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775

GPU - Asus HD 4870 1GB

RAM - not sure?

HDD - Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB Hard Drive SATAII *32MB Cache*

DVD - Pioneer DVR-216DBK 20x DVD±RW Dual Layer Internal SATA

PSU/Case - Coolermaster Elite 330 Black Case With CM eXtreme Power 650W PSU

Motherboard - Asus P5Q-E P45 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard

Monitor - Samsung SM2433BW 24" TFT Monitor 1920x1200 20000:1 300cd/m2 5ms VGA/DVI

so how does it look? will everything integrate together ok?

still unsure on ram...can't be OCZ as it may not work with asus motherboard...cpu will be clocked to around 3.0ghz...which of these are good?

What is your budget? What is the maximum you will spend? Where are you located?

Also, get a nvidia card.

Don't expect that system to last anywhere near 5 years. Nothing does

my last desktop lasted 7 years before i decided it was too slow...in that time i had 1 hard drive failure and that was all...a desktop should easily last 5 years...i'm not fussed if i can't play the latest games in 5 years time

the q9400 puts me over my budget...

am happy with the hd 4870 1gb as the gfx card, very good value for money

have also chosen the ram now...

only thing i'm concerned about...is the coolermaster PSU up to the job?

Don't know if you are interested but it looks like from ebuyer you may purchase the MSI KA790GX with a Phenom II 940 for less cost than your P5Q-E/Q6600 combo.

The downside is that it looks to be the only 790gx/sb750 mobo I've seen that does not have Crossfire - but it is already qualified for a AM3 cpu ...

Some reviewers on NewEgg have noted that the AC Freezer 7 will not fit that mobo unless you bend some heat sink fins. You may want to research it a bit.

Budget, budget, budget.

Yes, you'd get a lot more help. ATer's can even price up a build in UK£.

I didn't experience any problems installing a Freezer 7 Pro on the P5Q Pro build I put together a couple weeks ago. Don't know what issues other people could be having.
