My first time on Linux!

I just finished installing Mandrake 8.2...I know virtually nothing about Linux...and damn is it cool! The installation went totally smooth, it detected all my hardware
and now I am up and surfin' the net, listening to tunes, and checking out all the cool stuff that came with the installation. Oh ya, did I mention I downloaded it
for free!

As I type this I notice that it's not wrapping the text to the next line, and I can't seem to get my volume up really loud (it's still pretty loud but maxed out...). Those
are my only complaints so far...

Any advice for a total newb?

Thanks y'all!

For your volume settings, type GMIX at shell and adjust the volume there.
It depends on your browser, but text wrapping will still occur, you just cannot see it while you type.

Hey thanks CorporateRec. After hunting around GNOME a bit I found the shell under terminals...and now my volume works great!

Quick reply by the way!

I'm jealous... always wanted to give Linux a try but I play too many games for it to be a satisfying solution on my main computer. Maybe I'll throw something together and try it out. Is this Mandrake 8.2 the best version for a basic home user?

MD8.2 is nice because it has all of the major Linux desktops and applications within a click or two away.

I'm a very basic home user....I surf the net and play UT and that's about it. Since Mandrake 8.2 is the only flavour of linux I've ever tried I can't really compare it to anything.
But as far as ease of installation I would highly recommend it...just read the instructions, answer the questions when they pop up...it ever partitioned my hard drive for me...
that was the biggest worry I had. Now I am using GNOME which is a Windows-like interface so everything is somewhat familiar.

I'm dual booting right now with Win98 cuz there must be a few things that I will only be able to do in Windows....anyway, after installing linux it will automatically ask you what OS
you want to load up at startup.

I only wish I had access to all my downloaded MP3s that are on my Windows partition...at least I don't think I have access to them...

Congrats on the volume. If you need any other linux help don't hesitate to gaim me or something or drop me a PM.

Since you mention gaim...is that compatible with MSN messenger? I hope so cuz I have some friends on there that I'd like to be able to talk to while I have linux up and running...

You do. Linux can read and write to the FAT32 filesystem. Mandrake should automatically mount the volume for you, check under /mnt/win_c (that's where it used to put the "C:" drive, it might still).

Sure it can. Writing to NTFS is not recommended, but it can read NTFS without any problems. I do so on a daily basis.

Oh, and Skinner2: Welcome to the club . You will find out that some things work differently than they do on Windows, but it is a great learning-process . Also, try out KDE (the other popular desktop), then you can decide which one you like the most.

Does reading NTFS require a kernel recompile?

I'll give GNOME a try for a while then check out KDE...

So what browser do you guys use? I'm using Galeon right now...I was trying out Mozilla back on Windows and it seemed pretty good except when I tried to activate
a cell phone over the internet...the website (Telus Mobility) only accepted IE and Netscape because of encryption I am thinking....do you guys find any problems with the browser you use?

Cheers.

If your kernel is not compiled with NTFS-support, then yes. There you also enable the writing NTFS-support, but it's not recommended.

I use Konqueror myself, and I think it's great ! I have ran in to few websites that refuse to work with it, but after I tell Konqueror to tell the website that it's actually IE, the website works like it should. Only website right now that doesn't work with Konqueror is my online bank, and I use Mozilla there instead. I expect that to be fixed once I upgrade to Konqueror 3.0 (comes with KDE 3.0. I'm currently at 2.2.2)

Linux is like a McLaren F1 with a 5hp Briggs & Stratton. It looks awesome at first glance and has potential, but after you start it up for real, you realize how bad it sucks. I've installed 8 different flavors of Linux and they all suck. Very poor hardware support, poor program support, whole new command line interface to learn, no Windows compatability, and it is just to hard for the average Joe to run.

If I wanted reliability, I'd go straight Unix or Solaris.

If I wanted free and/or unique, I'd go BeOS.

If I wanted ease of use and compatability with damn near everyone on the planet, I'd go with Windows (XP).

If I wanted another Linux distro to waste my money on and add to the other 8 versions I don't use because they suck and blah blah ~ Linux.

Galeon is a good little browser. It's built on the mozilla gecko engine but unlike mozilla galeon flat out flies.
I think it's a better browser than Opera for Linux.
