Thread Title: My friend 'hates' God.
I'm sure many people do. I don't hate him, but I certainly don't believe in him.
Thread Title: My friend 'hates' God.
This is a great way of thinkingOriginally posted by: Robor
I don't hate "God", but I'm not a God fearing person, do not practice any organized religion, and base my beliefs on what I've learned and see in life today. Instead of following some ancient religious guidelines I try to live my life in a way that both makes me happy and is considerate of others. Call me a heathen for my thinking but I know plenty of people who consider themselves "good Christians" but judge and even hate others based on their different religous faith, race, sexual preference, etc. I may not go to church but I know I'm a good person and although I may not be perfect I try do my best to correct my flaws and help others.

Wow... harsh words coming from another lemming...
Say what you want man, believe what you want. I'm not stopping you and I can't help my opinions but I know 90% of atheists I talk to haven't read the bible nor have they really given God's teachings any thought

I got into this big discussion with my friend at work today about religon. He's all about proving that it doesn't exsist, Jesus didn't exsist and God doesn't exsist. He's prone on how there is no proof and he wants to see God himself before he'll belive any further. He then trailed onto how "God" lets people die horrible deaths and what a great God he is for doing that (sarcasim). He's lost his mother, step-dad, and sister (i think) to cancer, DUIs and other things I guess, and it really hit him inside. He blames God for it, much like mel gibson in "signs" for taking his wife away. It doesn't help that he's rather taller and everyone else (which he hates) and he's skinny / not that great looking which makes him hate God even more for making him that way. Is there anyway I can give him advise, or some guidence to even a little bit of faith? Or anything for that matter....

The church is the the organisation that have made the most damage to mankind ever. Working against new ideas and science all from the beginnig. Inprisoning and killing people because they thought different.

The same book that tells you to destroy your enemies, cast newborn babies against rocks, kill, murder, slain, torture and torment other people?
If you are going to refer to scriptures, you'd better give the chapter, verse...
"Thus saith the LORD of hosts ... go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass."
--1 Samuel 15:2-3
Exodus 21:15-17
"And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the LORD thy God: and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out upon the altar of the LORD thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh."
--Deuteronomy 12:27
"So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining."
--Deuteronomy 3:3
Ooops, it seems that atheists and other non-beleivers must be executed: Deuteronomy 17:2-7
God seems to love killing: Deuteronomy 32:39-43
Need I go on?
Few more seconds and there'll be a post that says:
"HEY! You can't take that literally! It means... love your neighbor... somehow I'm sure it does!"
The ultimate loophole for any religious fanatics when they're stuck in a corner: the literality argument.

Well, most people I argue with like to ignore Old Testament scripture. God was a brutal savage back in tha day...
God is all about peace on Earth:
"Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."
..........Numbers 31:17 (Moses)
" . . . and the people lamented because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter."
..........I Samuel 6:19
"The men of Judah captured another ten thousand (men) alive and took them to the top of the rock and threw them down from the top of the rock; and they were all dashed to pieces."
..........2 Chronicles 25:12
"Happy shall he be who takes your little ones and dashes them against the rock!"
..........Psalms 137:9
"But God will shatter the heads of his enemies..."
..........Psalms 68:21
"Samar'ia shall bear her guilt, because she has rebelled against her God; they shall fall by the sword, their little ones shall be dashed in pieces, and their pregnant women ripped open."
..........Hosea 13:16
"Slay and utterly destroy after them, says the Lord, and do all that I have commanded you."
..........Jeremiah 50:21
"Then they (the Israelites) utterly destroyed all in the city, both men and women, young and old, sheep and asses, with the edge of the sword."
..........Joshua 6:21
"...Men'ahem sacked Tappuah and all who were in it and its territory from Tirzah on; because they did not open it to him, therefore he sacked it, and ripped up all the women in it who were with child."
..........2 Kings 15:16
"Behold the day of the Lord comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger...Whoever is found will be thrust through and whoever is caught will fall by the sword. Their infants will be dashed in pieces before their eyes, their houses will be plundered and their wives ravished."
..........Isaiah 13:9, 13:15
"I will strew your flesh upon the mountains, and fill the valleys with your carcass. I will drench the land even to the mountains with your flowing blood..."
..........Ezekiel 32:5
"Behold, I will corrupt your seed and spread dung upon your faces..."
..........Malachi 2:3
"...I make weal and create woe, I am the Lord, who do all these things."
..........Isaiah 45:7
"'Pass through the city after him, and smite; your eye shall not spare and you shall show no pity; slay old men outright, young men and maidens, little children and women...'"
..........Ezekiel 9:5
And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.
..........Jeremiah 13:14
Women better watch out for their God:
"Behold the day of the Lord is coming, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in the midst of you. For I will gather the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women ravished..."
..........Zachariah 14:1
"...I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the light of this sun."
..........2 Samuel 12:11
"For the wife does not rule over her own body, but the husband does..."
..........1 Corinthians 7:4
"Likewise, you wives, be submissive to your husbands..."
..........1 Peter 3:1
"As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."
..........1 Corinthians 14:34
"Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord."
..........Ephesians 5:22
Jesus love you:
"Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother- in-law...."
..........Matthew 10:34
"Do you think I have to come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother- in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in- law.
..........Luke 12:51
"'But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.'"
..........Luke 19:27 (parable)
"And let him who has no sword sell his mantle and buy one."
..........Luke 22:36

But it's perfectly OK to say single lines from the bible like "God is Love!" and "Jesus is Love!". But if someone quotes one of the "less-desireable" quotes from the bible, then it's "taken out of context"
Fact is, that your loving God urges his followers to kill and torture other people, even little children.

As i said, religion has done its fair share of bad deeds in the past.
However, how can you hold the those deeds commited by religious fanatics/zealots/lunatics hundreds and thousands of years ago against people of religion today?
