The only thing that bugs me about the DPS on the 8inxp is that it seems to block the air flow of my rear fans. I have an Antec 1030 case. Seems to block the airflow from cup to the exhaust fans. Not sure this will prevent me from getting this board though.

Man...I LOVE this board! . Have my 2.53 @ 2.945 (155 x 19) on stock voltage @ 42C. Rock solid with two 256mg sticks of Corsair CMX3200C2 ram. Don't know if the DPS has anything to do with it but hey...that blue neon glow looks kewl comin' thru my side panel fan grills .

Elvis2...U DA MAN! Well, I'm still waiting for the rest of my hardware and mobo to show up! It seems that sony is going to top the list of vaporware with their dru 500a...damn "richard craniums"! Not to mention Seagate...bastards! Where's my serial HD! And Gigabyte...where's my mobo! This is killin me! Anyhow, we got the same ram which is a good thing...I went with 2 sticks of 512mb though...same ddr400 though.
I don't think this will present its' self as a problem...we'll see, maybe by February I'll know! I went with the 3.06...we'll soon(i hope) see if this makes for a killer arrangement! I think you and I have been talking about this setup since the early part of November, at least one of us has put it together...I bought an L.I.S. led display. However they don't make a black mount with a blue led, so I bought the green display and changed mounts...now I got a blue display with a black mount! Only problem now is, I got a green display with an aluminum mount! I'll see how it looks after I get everything together and see if anyone wants to buy the green led w/ "Brushed" aluminum mount. The led display looks awesome mounted in the SF 201-b case...it'd be nice if I could fire it up one of these days! If you can, post your ram timings...

Anybody think the GB chipset is going to be an overclocking bottleneck? Since its only rated for DDR266 and locked to a 1:1 ratio, I wonder will it be the limiting factor, as opposed to processor or RAM?

Looking at Elvis2's preliminary results, and those given in the anandtech review, 155MHz and 163MHz FSBs respectively - these are still a little shy of the 166MHz/DDR333 level.

In these tests the RAM seems unlikely to be causing the bottleneck, since its DDR400 CAS2. I don't know enough about the overclocking capabilities of P4's to tell whether they could be the limit here (anybody know more about this?). The fact that Elvis2 managed to overclock the FSB further (albeit unstably) when he increased Vcore does suggest that the processor might have some limiting effect - but maybe Vcore affects the chipset too - anybody know whether the processor <-> chipset lines run at Vcore or some higher fixed (e.g. 2.5/3.3V) voltage, and what voltage does the chipset run off?

I remember reading a suggestion that the GB memory controller could be "older" technology, adapted from a previous Intel chipset, and that this was responsible for the DDR266 (as opposed to DDR333 specification).

With this in mind, I'm debating whether to get a GB board (if they ever get them in stock here in Europe), or wait for SiS655 (might be in for a long wait). Course this will depend on reviews of 655 boards, if they'd ever show up (hint hint Anandtech

So Elvis? were you overclocking through the easy tune OC utility? this feature has kinda of grown on me while playing with an 8IEXP board. you can save your OCed settings once you find your sweet spot and call them up when needed for gaming or benching.

I will do my best to keep her humming along. Hopefully I can beat the previous speed of 3.06 that I had on my BE7 with my 2.4b c1. Looking forward to it, though I did not want to come by one at someone elses loss.

Elvis2....this can't be so! This is a dark day indeed. I'm stunned...I don't know what to think...Some of the thoughts running through my head are..."Maybe this mobo sucks?...maybe Elvis2 loves this mobo but extreme financial difficulties have arisen to force his hand..." What a turn of events...I'm very sorry to hear this Elvis2...I hope you sell it and that things work out for you...I'm sure it will go in no time...

...ah, see...it sold in no time! Elvis2, if the tears aren't blurring your vision too much, could you post your ram timings for me? I'm sorry to see this my friend!

Good luck with 8INXP PJ! I've been running mine for about a week now with my 2.8ghz P4. I'm a novice at the P4 OC game -- a recent convert from the AMD camp. I'm slowly ramping her up -- measuring stability, which is more important to me than the raw speed.

Right now at 155FSB (3.23ghz) -- mem timings 5-2-2-2 -- things seem 'relatively' stable. I can run memtest for hours w/no errors, loop 3dMark2001 endlessly but every so often WIN XP gives me a 'device error,' video resolution drops and I need a reboot whereby I get a 'cryptic' message from XP that points to a 'system minidump' error. Actually, at the 155FSB I haven't gotten this 'minidump' error in 3 days now of pretty heavy usage (3Dgames, video encoding). But I had her up at 160 and would occasionally get that error and to avoid those reboots, I dropped down to 155.

Everything is running stock for me -- stock heatsink and default voltages and settings (except for the quick mem timings). I've got a 2 sticks of 512 Corsair XMS3200C2 in her and the rig runs off an Antec 430w Smartpower. Radeon 9700 Pro w/2.5 catalyst drivers.

As I said earlier, I'm a novice at this so I'll leave it to the 'experts' to really push the envelope on this board but I'll listen to and try most suggestions I read about here. Good luck with yours and I look forward to reading about your experience with it.

I finally got my 8inxp set up. It seems to work good the only thing is I don't get easy tune 4, anyone know where there is a tutorial for it online? It might not be reading right. Also the Audigy 2 is a hard to install with this setup for some reason. If you have hyperthreading I suggest not getting any of creatives current updates. Use the ones off the disc. There updates made XP lock up right away. Also when you set it to Top Performance in the bios it OC's the CPU by about 110mhz but doesnt' seem to OC the memory at all.

System
XP Pro
Intel P4 3.06 HT on
2x512mb Corsair PC3500XMS
Audigy 2 Platinum
Gainward ti4600 GS 128mb
Seagate Cheetah 10.6k U160
Gigabyte 8inxp
Aluminum window case/ps
Cold cathode light

Got the TB Santa Cruz in PCI Slot #3 with no issues on my 8INXP. Not running in Top Performance mode -- seemed to be some stability problems at 160FSB with Top Performance activated.

Have not tried EasyTune.

I got the mini dump error before and it was related to logitech mouseware drivers on my old pc. Sometimes the hard drive would hang during shutdown or the mouse will freeze after windows boots up on the 8inxp with the logitech mx700 drivers 9.7 and 9.75. I got it to work fine by getting the mouseware 9.73 off logitechs ftp site. As far as the audigy 2 the sound is great and its processor is fast. Turtle beach can cause some poor framerates or compatibility issues with some games such as battlefield 1942. But I never liked creatives drivers or logitechs. If creative doesn't clean up their audigy 2 driver releases my next sound card won't be creative. I saw a review of serial ata on hexus.net that showed dissapointing results fyi.

Do you think you could simply remove the northbridge fan on the 8inxp to cut down on fan noise? It looks like its in 2 pieces the fan/sink. I don't want it to overheat though, I was thinking of putting one of these on it http://www.maxcooler.com/zmnorchipcoo.html . The stock one kinda looks like that under the fan.
