My hard disk broke?

Pri Slave HDD Errors bios says

Bios says that it detects both primary master and primary slave, then when its time for boot up I get a message saying Pri Slave HDD Errors press F1 to Resume, I then press F1 and windows starts and my primary slave HD doesnt show up benath the primary master HD in explorer?(named utforskaren in swedish, dont know if i got it right in english?). I cant find it in windows xp. Also when i go into bios, WDC400BB stands on primary slave but when i check on settings it has the right cylinder number and so forth but on size it says about 8.4Gb. I have msi 865PE Neo2-fis2r with the latest ami bios v1.3.

Is my WD400BB broke? If not how do i get it to work properly?


My WD400BB worked with my old computer but my graphics card broke and i never tested my old comp with a new card instead i bought my current comp and expected my WD400BB to work. Maybe my WD400BB broke at the same time as my graphics card...?

That thing about the error, and press F1 to continue - does it say anything about SMART errors? Either way, this most likely means that your drive is dying. I'd say to go to Western Digital's website ASAP and download and run their diagnostic utilities on the drive.
Is the BIOS set to auto-detect the drive? If so, it will read all the proper settings for it, according to the drive.

Nothing about SMART errors but...read on. The bios is set to autodetect and it does detect it. beneath the text about autodetection where it detects both primary master HD and primary slave HD and secondary master cd, there is a line saying something about my primary master, SMART and fully functioning, cant remember the words exactly but it doesnt mention my primary slave at all

I gonna try using the diagnostic utilities if i find them but if i cant find the ´HD in windows can i anyway run the diagnostics....well grasping for straws is my only choice, gonna try that

ran the diagnostics i found on their website but the diagnostics program didnt find any western digital drive hmm....this looks dark

I agree, things are not looking very good for the drive. All I can offer is the following:

Put the diagnostic programs onto a floppy or CD-R(or DVD).
Create a boot floppy.
Disconnect all hard drives except the Primary Slave.
Boot up with the boot floppy and run the diagnostics again.

Hopefully it will detect the drive.


Also, you can try downloading knoppix and booting up the system into linux and see if it detects the drive. Knoppix is an entire linux distribution on a single CD-ROM, and it is bootable off that CD. All you have to do is place it into your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM and it should boot up. This will not copy/install anything to your hard drives. It is a great help when trying to diagnose problems like this. I am not sure how you formated your hard drives (i.e. FAT, FAT32, NTFS, etc), but linux can at least read from most of the formats, and write to many as well. You may be able to use linux to then backup all the data on the failing hard drive.

I did put some diagnostics on a floppy and booted up from floppy and started the diagn. prog but it didnt find the hd. Linux is just too much work, so:

WDC400BB time of death: 00.38 swedish time.....BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
