Poker is a zero sum game with no barrier to entry. You can be the best player in the world and still lose to donkeys. All those pros you see on TV? Most are broke and none ever play with their own money. It's a good thing you learned this lesson now while you are relatively poor. You sound like a bright kid, but naive and you have much to learn. Take this as a cheap (and humbling) lesson and move on.

If you really want to play, do what I do. My friends and I have a $20 buy in weekly game, where we mostly shoot the shit and have pizza and beer.

The way I gamble is as follows: I walk in, and decide how much I will spend. On average its 40-50 bucks. I play the 40-50 bucks as long as I want. I go up as long as I want. then I just walk to a table and purposely crash it all. It drives my friends crazy because I always go up 90-100 dollars. But one thing that I keep in mind is that money isn't really real. No matter how much I go up, I went down the second I put money at a table. I'm playing for the entertainment value, much like a the arcades at the video game. If I win, I get to play more (Freeplay for beating a game @ the arcades)

I use to play online a lot too, I played and thought about it so much I guess you could consider it an addiction. Although I actually came out well ahead, I decided to quit because I felt like it was affecting my life in a negative way. Maybe you just need to have that epiphany where you realize it's just not worth it.

I'm assuming he went all in on the flop in a $1k pot. He probably didn't raise enough pre-flop, and took the chance his opponent didn't catch a set on the flop. You can view it as a cooler or as a bad play. Either way, he lost his bankroll on one hand, hence he = suck.

I would love to hear the betting sequence to pick his play apart.
