Hey - I have been an AMD freak for the majority of my computer life - I just ordered a new computer and I was wondering what i should expect out of it as far as overclocking goes.

-BTW, im not using stock cooling, i have a vantec aeroflow v1 for it.

3.4 to 3.6 would be what I would expect with good cooling and some toasty but not deadly temperatures! What made you decide to get the Prescott at 2.8 and not the Northwood for overclocking?

i dont care for a huge overclock - all i am looking for is to get it to about 3.2 to 3.5... i do a lot of 3D design and stuff like that, so the thing that made me choose prescott over the northwood was the 1MB L2 cache.

so if i can get it to 3.4 or 3.5 - that would be ideal. hopefully the aeroflow will do a good job of cooling it - i have an aeroflow on my amd machine and i love it to death.

i was also wondering how i would go about overclocking a p4 - since ive only had amd machines, all i had to do was adjust the multiplier and be happy - but with this p4 im not sure how to go about doing all the settings and such.

My running 3.2@default voltage 1.375V.
3.5Ghz@1.5V
3.7Ghz@1.65V (only boot into window)

Again, YMMY

You will most likely top out at 3.4GHZ on that 2.8E chip. 1MB cache of the prescott is way over rated. Your better choice would have been a Northwood that would run much cooler and give you better performance.

Overclock is from the BIOS on the IC7 and is painless. Intel overclocking is much easier and more stable than the AMD solutions. Memory bandwidth will be your problem, but there are memory dividers in the BIOS as well and this all available from the Softmenu.

Read your manual it will explain the features for you.

Dude are you the only one that doesn't see the value in a free space heater?

I am going Northwood perhaps...trying to figure if the jump from PIII-S Tualatin 1.4 @ 1.5 will be worth it.

u should able to do 3.2 easy. for overclocking, set your timings to SPD or higher then tightening then later, set your agp voltage to 1.6v, vdimm to 2.7-2.8 (or 2.6 if it's max of ur ram), set your ram divider to 5:4 to take our ram as your limiting factor when overclocking, up the FSB by 5mhz or 10mhz increment and boot into windows and check your stability, proceed until you've reach instability in windows or reboots, or can't boot into windows, then raise your vcore by .25 or whatever increment vcore your mobo provides. that's all i can think of, good luck!

TimeKeeper, Prescott's deafult vcore is 1.4v

I have a Asus P4P800E-Deluxe, how can i set the memory divider?
actually i use cpuid to identify the ram divider, the divider will changed but not am intend to do.
Prescott is very hot... Thesedays i even have to underclock it to 2.24G@1.375v(from 2.8@1.40v)
keeping it 35C idle
sure i will put it back to 3.4 or 3.5 when it is winter

actually, what is ur memory timing when u reach 3.4 or higher? can u still keep it CL@2.5... i have GeIL ram.
do u have to up the voltage when ur fsb is like 245mhz? ram and cpu?

I couldn't get my 2.8 prescott past 3.29 GHz(235mhz FSB). Anything higher than that and my pc would reboot itself when attempting to benchmark. At 240Mhz fsb, it wouldn't post. Using an Asus P4P800, thermalright sp-94 heatsink with a 72.5cfm fan.

Yes, technically it is suppose to be 1.4V MAX. (even printed on their retail box)
I used IC7 which known to be significantly under volt. (BIOS show it running at 1.375V)
I use ADATA PC4000 and runnig at Sync speed.
Prescott is bit hot, average idle temp is around 46C w/ stock HSF, but don't worry about it
I have been running 3.5Ghz 247 since May.

ive thought of cancelling my order to get a northwood instead, but i decided not to, if the prescott is terrible in the first couple days, i'll just return it for a northwood. no biggie.

i want to know what other's timing is...
I can get mine running at 245fsb @ 2.5 at 2.75v

TimeKeeper, u have A/C in that room?
cuz the heat from the psu and rear fans do make the room become an oven.

i slightly underclock it to 2.4G., actually take a little longer to boot into windows(2.24G will be faster) but of course when i play games 2.4 is a little faster..

i am very satisfy for a 36C prescott... coolest @ 34C

Do you have proper rated PSU? I used to have 300Watt PSU, and it does produce lots heat. After I upgrade it to 430Watts, it doesn't create much heat out from the PSU.

I have my AC set at 78F, which NOT all that cool. Again, don't worry about the CPU temp reading.
around 46C idle is perfectly normal.
Also, Video card/ HD does produce lots heat..and it is SUMMER now.

BTW, since I have PC4000, I run dual at 250Mhz @ Abit's Performance Bios Default.

hmm... Timekeeper, i understand your point. the psu i am using is the best (next to antec, enermax ...) psu i could get here.

when i put the cpu @ 3.4, the psu will get extremely hot. almost burn my hand., and i feel it will be bad for my health so i rather keeping it cool.. i underclock it and it became cooler.

if i don't set the vcore at 1.40v(however cpuid say it is 1.40v)., i've set it in bios 1.375. my idle temp won't be exceeding 38C. if i set it 1.40v even at same fsb., the temp will be raised like 41C (idle)

I will switch it to 3.4 once it is winter or at least gets cooler..., i've reached 24C before but i put the room temp at 16C

What is the PSU? Many will say 'it's the best one the store had', but that doesn't tell us anything...does it have the Voltages and Amps on the top?

There have been cases with the Prescott not working on PSU's that the Northwood O/C'd on fine, as well as one case I know of a PSU killed by a Prescott.

They aren't bad chips persay, but like when anything new comes out it's not all backwards compatible. The P4 / Athlon had these issues as well originally with loops and random reboots until people got the right PSUs.
