HI,

I have 2*512 Corsair TWINX 3200XL chips. The original timings is 2,2,2,5.
After installing a new motherboard k8n neo4-fi i got some strange problems.

The first i did was to take a look into the bios. I am not sure if the ram settings by default is set to manual or if i ,againt my will, changed it to manual.

Anyhow, now i know that the settings was manual and the timings was 2.5,2,2,5.
Started to install windows, but i got all possible errors. The file written to hd was not the same as the one on cd and a lot of bluescreens. I was not able to install.

Then i ran memtest86 and found that one ram chip didnt pass the test.
It always failed on 2 of the tests.

After setting the ram bios settings back to auto the bios found the correct timings and both
ram chips passed the test and windows could be installed.

What is happening here ? What settings in manual mode did make trouble ?
What if i want to overclock and have to lower the timings ? I really ned help here.
Thanx in advance.

Tommy,

It is difficult to see what the 'manual' settings were as only Tcl is visible set at 2.5 all other settings appear as 'auto.' The only setting that appeared incorrect was Command rate set at 2T. However, a 2T command rate would not have caused memtest to fail.

It is really impossible to say what may have caused the initial memtest failure without knowing what the 'auto' settings actually were.

If you have problems with ram, then boost the voltage. (within reasonable limits of course) And if that still doesn't work, go for looser timings. Keep going till you get a stable memtest386

don't you mean dain bramaged? but yeah, if your still running at stock voltage, try setting that up a few notches. Stock for those chips is like 2.6 or something? you could probably go to 2.8, mabye .9, without hurting anything. if you plan on overclocking, you will probably have to loosen the timings anyway.

Thanks for answering so fast.

Well, setting cas to 2,5 instead of 2, isnt that loosing the timings ? Why shoudnt the ram chips
manage that ?

Isnt this right : when my bios timing mode is set to auto, then all settings concerning the ram are auto. Setting it to manual some are auto and some have values, then shouldnt it be logic
that the settings not auto(in manual) are the settings that could be different from auto mode ?

If dont remember wrong my ram voltage is set to 2.5 volts.

I have a different question, but it has a little something to do with Memtest:

I have the Corsair CM2X1024-6400C3 RAM, which I suspect is faulty. First of all, it doesn't clock the way it should (no where near the 1120 Anandtech got 'em to). Second of all, they need quite a bit of voltage just to start up correctly. Third: when OC'ing to above 900 Mhz they fail #5 test on Memtest.

However, they seem to be OK at 800 MHz when I run them at 3-4-3-9 in Memtest. BUT I get an error in Orthos (at the 3rd test in Blend).

Finally, the question I have for you all:

Is there another program I can test the RAM with to get a confirmation on that there's something just not right?
