I'm formatting it right now... going to run some basic disk tests on it to make sure it works good.

Also, if you've installed one before, can ya give me any tips for doing a clean install of Windows XP onto this drive? Do I need drivers for the SATA controller? Or will WinXP recognize it right away? If I need drivers, can you point me to where I can find them to put on a floppy disk to install during Windows setup?

i went from a 5400 rpm 2mb buffer maxtor to a WD raptor, night and day differance. i :heart: my raptor. if it just did not make that high pitch whistle

Yeah, I thought that goes without saying... anyhow... now I have the task of moving my stuff over to the new drive. I think I'm just gonna transfer the My Documents folders, then reinstall programs, then move stuff like saved games and whatnot. Just one problem... since I already had a C: drive... it assigned D: to the boot partition... if I take my old drive out, will it change the new boot partition to C:? Or will it remain D:?

Any suggestions on easy ways to transfer files are appreciated.

I haven't had a chance to test it out much... but I can tell you this... It took me 12 minutes and 20 second from the time I hit F6 to install 3rd party storage drivers until I was sitting at the desktop of the fresh install of Windows XP Pro.

Well, I usually think of it as KB/sec=kilobytes/sec while kbps/sec=kilobits/sec
Just the different capitalization.

Most of the time though, hard drive speed is in bytes/sec, not bits.

Nice, reminds me of my RAID0 days. Man oh man WinXP installed quickly on that rig.

weird thing happened to me last week, I turned on my computer and ..... it was quiet... almost as quiet as beforee I got my dual raptors. They just stopped making that high pitched sound all of a sudden. I couldnt beleive it, because I never got used to that sound, it always irked me.

Everything is working fine and just as fast. I just hope it doesnt come back as mysteriously as it went away.

The biggest increase comes from the decreased seek time. High transfer rates are nice too... but the seek times of the Raptor are roughly 35% quicker.

If you install WinXP to a SCSI disk and an IDE disk is present, the SCSI disk will not be assigned C:! I have this problem as well so I put the IDE drive on the secondary channel and DVD on primary. Before I install XP, I go into BIOS and disable the secondary IDE channel. This way XP will only see the SCSI array and it will be drive C:. If you disconnect the other disk(s), it will remain drive D:!

The high pitched sound seems to have gone away on mine as well as the drive warmed up to operating temp... or maybe I just got use to it really quick... if I open the side panel I can hear it a little... but sitting here I can't even hear it if I try and listen for it. Sometimes I can hear it seek... it's a tad louder that my WD800JB when it seeks... I can't hear the JB at all... but every now and then I hear some quiet clicks... like when booting into Windows.

Jeff...I only had my single Raptor for 1 day before I RAIDed it and because of my rush I only took 1 benchmark which was Sisoft 2003...Anyways Here it Is if you want to compare that software.

It would get the next logical letter. If you don't partition your RAPTOR and have one optical drive, it will be drive E:

You cannot have two logical volumes assigned the same letter.

You're confusing me now... if I unplugged my IDE drive, will the primary partition of my Raptor become drive C:? Or would I have to repartition/reinstall Windows on the Raptor? And then what will happen when I plug my IDE back in? Will the Raptor's primary partition remain C: and the primary partition of the IDE drive be changed to D:?

The primary drive letter cannot be changed. Well it can be changed by editing the registry. I believe there is a section in the AT FAQ that covers this.

IF your SCSI (Winders thinks SATA is SCSI) is C, it will always be C. Plugging in any other disks will not make this change.
