So other than editing the registry, the only way to make my SCSI drive C: is to disconnect the IDE drive and repartition the Raptor?

Since you haven't installed any programs, just disconnect your IDE disk, put the XP disk in the CD rom and press F6 when prompted. Delete the partition and start over. When your computer restarts the second time (after you put your CD key in), shut down and reconnect the IDE drive. At this time you should use your favorite clone program (ghost, disk image, etc.) to make an image of your boot volume to the IDE disk.

Ok... gotcha... I'm not gonna bother cloning the drive... it's been almost 8 months since a reinstall, and things are getting very cluttered. Just going to move my personal files and such.

I just ordered this drive myself and had one question. Do you think I will see a performance decrease if I'm using a s-ata controller card to use the drive? My gigabyte doesn't feature s-ata, although it does have onboard raid which I will be using for my 2 80gb wdse's.

I doubt you'll notice a difference... I'd say a max of a 5 MB/s variance between controllers... maybe .5ms seek time variance... I'm probably even on the high side.

I've got my Raptor's primary partition as C: now =) ... thanks for the help shuttleteam

Drive is workin awesome... as soon as I get the rest of the important junk installed, I'll be back to post some benchmarks.

Sweet, let us know your scores. I ordered my raptor from newegg last week and received it today. I couldn't use it because my dumbarse forgot to order the ata controller card. I ordered it today, can't wait to slap windows on it.

Links to new benchies are in my profile. I'll post some Sandra stuff when I get around to installing it, but I don't feel like it right now =)

What chipset is your Gigabyte using?

I never heard any whistle with my raptors...but at one time they made some loud ass seeking noise. Then it just stopped. Sometimes if my drive gets very fragmented I hear it again. But all in all, my new computer with the raptors is much quieter than my Dell Dimension 8100, thanks in large part to the Sonata.

Want to see something really screwed up?

Put your SN in here

I had this problem and emailed WD about it. They JUST replied a few minutes ago saying the problem was fixed. Yes indeed it does say June 2008. I tried another SN (I have 6 SN's) and guess what? The others are only 1 year! You would think they would realise a mistake was made and fix the problem! Looks like people that have these drives over a year are going to have to call WD for warranty support! :|

Ummm... I don't see a problem... I bought my drive... it says the warranty expires in 5 years...

*EDIT* By the way... I should mention, my drive is a refurb from newegg... said it had a 3 year warranty... but WD's site says 8/1/2008. Yay for me!

Actually NO.

Capital B is Bytes small b is bits (or baud in some cases).

While that is the norm, HD Tach says kps. kps could mean kilo-anything persec. Hopefully, the person reading the results would have enough common knowledge to know storage uses bytes per second and network uses bits per second. Otherwise, they are a bit short on information!

Typical HD Tach Results Display

kps= kilobytes/sec.
