My Verizon DSL is slow

I had Verizon DSL for a while now, and in the beginning it seemed to be pretty fast, but over time, it got kida slow. I remember having speeds close to the rated 3mbps/768kbs, but now it's gone to 1894 / 645....
I have no viruses or trojans... I installed Win XP SP2 recently. (was using SP1 before)
I also have a D-Link DI-604 that I got recently.
I'm using an old Westell Wirespeed modem. This thing has never let me down before.
I used a free utility from "dslreports" to optimize my speed, but that hardly helped at all.
Any suggestions on how I can get things back to normal?

PS: I'm sorry for starting every sentence with "I" but that's how it turned out..

Google for "Westell diagnostic icon". Install it, press the magic key sequence (ctrl-alt-f7 I think) and post the results. Also post the results after power cycling the modem, if they're much different.

I'm using a router..
Tried westell diagnostics.. it couldnt find my modem.. so I used the "configure static ip" option... that killed my internet connection. Thank god for 2nd computer in the house and google... lol
Fixed everything. But the diagnostic utility still cant find my modem.

PS: Why would anyone want to configure a static IP?? What's that used for? (Just a side question if u have the time)

To answer your static IP question:

A: Static IP addresses allow you to do Web hosting locally at your home or business. You can also use them to remotely access your computers over the Internet (for example, telnet or FTP).

Basically, a static IP means people can always use the same IP. Another example, if you're running a game server, and people know the address is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, you don't want that address to change.

Verizon has its own speedtest which is actually very accurate and does not fudge the speed to make themselves look good.

I had same problem with upload speed going down to 192 mbps from average 625 and the download speed still good going 2700+ mbps. I called verizon reps they said they have no control over upload speed

ibex333, directly connect your PC to the modem with a cable (crossover, regular, whatever gives you a link) and disable every kind of "firewall" in your PC temporarily to use the Westell diagnostic software. It does some wierd stuff and doesn't get along with any of them. You should never need to use the "configure static IP" option.
